The formula is learnable, repeatable, and works across every biology role and research stage.

Verb-first format (most common):
[Strong verb] + [organism / samples / data] + [methods / duration] + [yield / discovery / outcome]

Example: "Cultured bacterial colonies on selective media using aseptic technique over a 10-week research project, isolating 8 colony variants with 95% genetic purity confirmed by sequencing."

The key difference in biology: outcomes focus on reproducibility, data accuracy, novel findings, or research contribution—not just task completion.

Why each slot matters in biology

  • Verb: Lab verbs (Cultured, Isolated, Quantified, Characterized) signal hands-on research competency and responsibility for real data. Weak stems ("Helped", "Assisted with") obscure whether you designed the experiment or merely executed a single step.
  • What: Specific organisms, samples, or datasets ground the reader. "Bacterial colonies" is concrete. "8 bacterial colony variants from soil samples" tells the reader the experimental scope and complexity you managed.
  • How: Methods and tools signal technical depth. "Using PCR and gel electrophoresis" names the techniques. "Over a 10-week independent research project" indicates project scale. Add instrument names (thermocycler, spectrophotometer, microscope) and methodological standards (aseptic technique, sterile field).
  • Result: In biology, results must be measurable and reproducible: colony count, yield in nanograms, % purity, statistical confidence, or a novel finding. Avoid overreach: "contributed to research" is too vague. "Generated 8 unique strains" is concrete and credible.

Be precise about your role without overstating group outcomes as personal achievement.

How do I write bullets for computational biology or bioinformatics?

Name the software, dataset size, and output (genes identified, networks mapped, predictions tested).

Pre-med vs. industry track—does it change my bullets?

Slightly. Can I list skills from high-school research or summer camps?
