What Do I Need in My Fourth Section?
Many universities require both an overall minimum and a minimum in each section. Use this tool to work backward: given a target overall band and three known scores, what's the minimum fourth section score you need?

The Rounding Rule, With Every Case Worked Out
The IELTS overall band is the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. But "nearest" has a special rule for .25 and .75.

Why this matters
A .25 average rounds up by 0.25 points, and a .75 average rounds up by 0.25 points as well. This is the official IELTS rule—it slightly favors higher scores when your average lands on these critical decimals.
Overall Band vs Per-Section Minimums
Many universities set a minimum overall band and a minimum for each section. A strong Listening or Reading cannot rescue a weak Writing. Here are typical expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take IELTS and TOEFL together, or do I have to pick one?
Most universities accept either one. Pick based on your strengths: IELTS emphasizes British English and real-world vocabulary; TOEFL uses American English and academic reading passages. Many test takers do both and submit the stronger score. Check the specific program you're applying to, since a few may have a preference.
What's the difference between Academic and General Training IELTS?
Academic IELTS is for university and professional registration; it tests more academic vocabulary and complex reasoning. General Training is for immigration, secondary education, and workplace purposes. Most universities require Academic IELTS. The band scale (0–9) is the same, but reading and writing passages differ significantly.
How long does an IELTS score stay valid?
IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. After two years, they are no longer accepted by most institutions. If you're applying to university next year, a score from this year will still count. Check with your target program to confirm their specific requirements.
How is IELTS scored differently from TOEFL?

Can I retake IELTS if I don't reach my target band?
Yes. You can retake IELTS as many times as you want. Many people retake it once or twice to improve a weak section (often Writing or Speaking). Plan retakes for at least 7–10 days apart so you have time to practice. Universities will see all your scores, so if you retake, you can usually ask them to consider only the highest one.
