TOEFL Score Validity: When Scores Arrive, Expire, and Who Sees What

You see unofficial Reading and Listening scores the moment you finish the test, but Speaking and Writing need scoring, so the full official report takes about 3 days to reach your ETS account, with an email telling you it is ready. The PDF version, the one you actually attach to an email or upload to a portal, becomes downloadable 1 more day after that, so budget roughly 4 days from test day to PDF in hand.

This timeline holds whether you tested under the 1–6 scale that launched on January 21, 2026, or, for an earlier test date, the legacy 0–120 scale: the score-scale update changed what the report shows, not how fast it arrives. Say you scored higher on Speaking in March and higher on Writing in July: MyBest takes the better of the two per section rather than forcing you to pick one sitting. ETS prints both your specific test-date scores and your MyBest scores on the same official report, so a school that requests one report still receives both figures side by side.

Acceptance is not standardized. ETS is explicit that each institution sets its own requirements, so treating your TOEFL result the way a school might superscore an SAT is a program-level decision, not an ETS one. The only reliable check is to search the admissions office's published English-proficiency policy for the word "MyBest," or email the office directly and ask. Example: you tested in November 2025 and scored 88 overall on the old scale, then retested in March 2026 on the new scale and scored a 5.0 overall. Because March is your newest test, your MyBest panel expresses the November 88 in 1–6 terms too. An 88 total falls in the 86–94 range that ETS maps to 4.5, so it reads as a 4.5 before your best section results across the two sittings get combined.

Now flip it: if your only two tests were in October 2025 and December 2025, both before the January 21, 2026 cutover, your MyBest section shows only 0–120 figures, even if you pull the report today, because neither sitting has a new-scale score to switch the format to.

1. During registration, choose up to four institutions, agencies, or fellowship sponsors in your ETS account.
2. Keep changing that list right up until 10 p.m. local test-center time on test day itself. After that, the four free slots lock in, or if you never chose any, you owe a fee for every recipient you add later.
3. To add more recipients afterward, sign back into your ETS account and order additional reports for US$25 per institution, as of September 2026.
4. Delivery speed depends on how the recipient receives it: about 4–8 business days through ETS Data Manager, 8–10 business days through direct server feeds, or 10–12 business days plus mailing time for a paper copy.

The fee is per recipient, not per order. A realistic case: you apply to 10 schools. Four are free. The other six cost 6 × US$25 = US$150, on top of your base TOEFL registration fee, which is separate and varies a lot by country. A school can tell you tested more than once whenever your MyBest numbers differ from your single test-date numbers, since that gap only exists because MyBest pulled a better section score from a different date. But the report does not hand over a chronological list of every attempt, score, and date the way a full transcript would. If you want a school to see exactly one sitting and nothing else, you cannot really engineer that: MyBest is calculated automatically and appears on every official report, regardless of which specific test date you asked ETS to send.

At the end of the test you get one choice for all four sections together: report them, or cancel them. Once you choose to report, that decision is final. Once you choose to cancel, you get no refund of your test fee, and the score is gone from your record unless you reinstate it. Reinstatement has to be requested within 60 days of the test date, and reinstated scores post to your account about 3 weeks after ETS receives the request and payment.

In practice, cancelling is almost always the wrong move. You would be giving up a score you have not seen, on the chance it is worse than expected, then paying a fee and waiting three weeks to get it back if you change your mind. Waiting the 3 days for your official score and deciding then keeps the same safety net open without the extra delay.

ETS built the transition period for exactly this problem. A program whose published requirement still reads, say, "80 or above" can evaluate your report using the comparable 0–120 number ETS prints alongside your 1–6 score. ETS's own guidance to institutions recommends mapping old thresholds to new ones as follows, while flagging that this loses precision near the edges of each band, since a 5.0 threshold now covers everyone who used to score anywhere from 95 to 106.

If an admissions office emails asking what your score means, the most useful reply includes three things: your test date, the comparable 0–120 figure printed on your own official report, and a link to ETS's public score-scale update page so the office can see the full mapping table itself.

A score review sends your actual spoken and written responses back to ETS scoring specialists for a second look. You have to request it before you ask ETS to send that score to any institution or agency, and each section can be reviewed only once. If your original score is confirmed, you get an email within about 3 weeks and pay the fee either way. If the review does change your score, ETS is explicit that it can move in either direction, up or down, and the new number becomes your permanent official score for that test date.

That two-sided risk is the honest answer to "what are my odds": ETS does not publish a rate of scores that improve on review, and the fact that a score can also drop is the reason to request one only when you have a specific, concrete reason to think the original scoring missed something, not simply because a higher number would help.
