Low-Cost Accredited Online Master's Programs, With Verified Tuition

Twenty-seven accredited online master's degrees whose price was read off the university's own bursar or tuition page on 8 September 2026, with that date and link on every card. Set your pace in credits per term and the explorer recomputes each total from credits, rate and mandatory fees.

Which low cost online master's programs are cheap once fees are added?

Pace drives term count. Where a program publishes a minimum load, a lower number is raised to that minimum and the card says so.

No rank numbers appear anywhere on this page. Ranking tables are proprietary and are not reproduced here, and a rank position is not a price. Read the rankings section for what those tables measure and what they leave out, or see how graduate school rankings are built.

How is this list built and what does verified mean here?

Method

One rule decides whether a program is on this list: the price has to come from a page the university itself publishes and bills from. A bursar page, an official tuition schedule, a registrar rate table, or a program page run by the university that states its own tuition. Everything else was discarded, including recruiter microsites, aggregator listings and any figure whose age could not be established.

The three things that make a cheap-degree list go stale are the three things this page records per row: the exact number, the page it came from, and the day it was read. Each card carries a verified on line at the same visual weight as the price, because the date is the claim. A row whose date passes twelve months picks up a stale badge automatically and drops below fresh rows under every sort order. On 8 September 2026 no row is stale, since all twenty-seven were read that day.

What gets a row excluded

  1. Marketing-only pricing. If the only place a number appears is an admissions brochure or a lead-generation page, it is not billable and the row is dropped.
  2. No published credit requirement. A per-credit rate without a stated credit count cannot produce a total, so the program is left off rather than guessed at.
  3. Undated schedules. Several state universities publish a fee schedule PDF with no academic year printed on it. Those were skipped, even where the rate looked attractive.

That last filter is why the list leans toward institutions with unusually plain pricing pages. Eleven of the twenty-seven rows come from one university, Arkansas State, because its online division prints the credit count, the per-credit rate and the all-in total on each program page. Transparency is what got those rows in. Treat the shape of this list as a map of who publishes clearly, not as a claim that nobody else is cheap.

Two figures on each card come from different pages: the price from the bursar or tuition page, the credit requirement from the catalog or degree-requirements page. Both links sit on the card so you can check either one. If you are still assembling a shortlist, the grad school application cost calculator handles the separate pile of application fees, transcripts and evaluations that this page does not cover.

Why is total cost credits times price plus fees, not the number in the headline?

The arithmetic this page runs is short. For a per-credit program, total equals credits required multiplied by the per-credit price, plus the number of terms multiplied by the mandatory fee per term, where terms is credits divided by your pace, rounded up. For a flat-rate program, total equals terms multiplied by the per-term price plus that term's fee. Everything below is a case where a published total quietly drops one of those pieces.

Mistake 1: the advertised total is tuition only

Georgia Tech's Online MS in Computer Science is 30 credit hours. At the Fall 2026 Georgia resident rate of $227 per credit hour that is $6,810, and $6,810 is the number that circulates. The bursar's Fall 2026 schedule also charges a mandatory fee of $531 per term to students taking four or more credit hours in these online programs. Six credits a term means five terms, so five times $531 is $2,655. The corrected total is $9,465, which is 39 percent above the tuition-only figure.

Tuition only versus tuition plus fees for the Georgia Tech OMSCS degree A 6,810 dollar tuition bar next to a 9,465 dollar bar made of the same tuition plus 2,655 dollars of mandatory fees across five terms. TUITION ONLY: $6,810 TUITION + FEES: $9,465 + $2,655 IN FEES 30 credit hours at $227, plus 5 terms at $531, Fall 2026 rates

Mistake 2: the advertised total assumes a pace you will not keep

Western Governors University charges a flat $4,850 per six-month term for graduate business programs for terms beginning on or after 1 October 2026, plus a $200 e-books and resources fee. The MBA is 34 competency units, and WGU markets it as finishable in two terms, which is 2 times $5,050, or $10,100. The published minimum for a full-time graduate student is 8 competency units per term. A student who works at that minimum needs five terms, which is 5 times $5,050, or $25,250. Same program, same price list, two and a half times the money. Set the pace input to 8 and then to 17 and watch the WGU cards move while the per-credit cards barely twitch.

Mistake 3: the advertised rate is the resident rate

Georgia Tech's own program page gives the OMS Analytics total three ways: $11,880 for Georgia residents, $12,348 for other U.S. students, $12,960 for international students. Those are 36 credit hours at $330, $343 and $360 respectively. Georgia Tech's Fall 2026 schedule notes that students who matriculated from Fall 2025 onward pay the rate matching their residency, so the old blanket waiver does not apply to new entrants. The explorer uses the resident rate for every Georgia Tech row and each card names the two higher rates, because a $1,080 gap on a $12,000 degree is not a rounding error.

Fees are not one thing. Georgia Tech charges per term with a threshold at four credit hours. The University of Nebraska at Kearney publishes distance-education, library and technology fees per credit hour. Arkansas State and Fort Hays State fold fees into a single all-in per-credit rate. Chadron State prints an online rate described as inclusive of tuition and fees. Read the fee line on the bursar page, not the tuition line.

Per-credit or flat-rate term: which pace makes each one cheap?

The two pricing models reward opposite behavior, and knowing which one you are buying is worth more than a few dollars of per-credit difference.

How pace changes the total under each pricing model
Question Per-credit program Flat-rate term program
What you buy One credit at a time Six months of unlimited progress
Going faster Saves only fees, not tuition Saves whole terms of tuition
Going slower Adds fee terms, tuition unchanged Adds full-price terms
Worked example at 6 per term $9,465 (Georgia Tech OMSCS, 30 cr, 5 fee terms) $25,250 (WGU MBA, 34 CU, 5 terms at the 8 CU minimum)
Worked example at 17 per term $7,872 (same, 2 fee terms) $10,100 (same, 2 terms)
Suits you if You take one course a term around a job You can clear several courses in six months

Read the two example rows together. Between 6 and 17 credits per term the Georgia Tech total falls by $1,593, all of it fee, while the WGU total falls by $15,150, because every saved term is a saved tuition payment. Note also that at 6 units the WGU row is computed at 8, the published minimum load, which is why its 6-per-term figure is not simply six terms of tuition. If you know you can only give a degree five hours a week, a flat-rate term program is the more expensive purchase even when its headline price looks lower. If you can go hard for a year, it is the cheapest thing on this page.

One honest caveat about competency-based pacing: finishing 17 units in six months means passing roughly six assessments in twenty-six weeks while employed. Plan the total on the pace you have held before, not the one you intend to hold. If you are weighing two funded offers against a self-paid online degree, the funding offer comparison calculator puts stipend, tuition waiver and duration side by side, and the student loan calculator shows what borrowing the gap costs per month.

What does an affordable online masters accredited program not buy?

Price is the honest part of these programs. What the price omits is worth naming, because the omissions are structural rather than accidental.

Advising is scaled, not personal

The economics that produce a $9,465 master's degree require an advising model that serves thousands of students per staff member. Some programs are explicit about their model: WGU assigns a program mentor who reviews your degree plan at the end of every six-month term, which is a defined relationship rather than an open door. Others route you to a shared graduate coordinator inbox. Before enrolling, ask one concrete question by email and time the reply. That number tells you more than any brochure.

Career services access varies and is rarely priced separately

Ask specifically whether online students can book the same appointments, attend the same employer events and use the same job board as on-campus students, and whether access continues after graduation. Do not accept a yes about the university; ask about your program code.

Cohort community has to be built by you

Asynchronous, self-paced delivery is what keeps the price down and it is also what removes the accidental contact that makes a cohort. Where a program runs a student-led community, that is a real asset. Where it does not, assume you will finish the degree without a network, and budget your own effort accordingly.

Capstone supervision is thin by design

Most of the programs on this list end in a capstone rather than a thesis, and a capstone is generally assessed against a rubric rather than supervised by an individual faculty member across months. If your goal is a doctorate, that difference matters: a rubric-scored capstone does not produce the research relationship that generates a strong recommendation letter. Read the degree-requirements page for the words used around the final project, and if a PhD is the destination, the statement of purpose guide for an MS in computer science covers how to build research evidence inside a coursework degree.

Is the cheapest online master's degree here still properly accredited?

Institutional accreditation is the load-bearing check. It determines whether your credits transfer, whether the degree is recognized by employers and licensing boards, and whether the program is eligible for federal student aid. Programmatic accreditation is a second, narrower check that matters in fields with licensure or professional gatekeeping. Every school on this list holds institutional accreditation from an accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and you can confirm any of them yourself in the Department's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

Institutional and programmatic accreditors for every school in the explorer
University Institutional accreditor Programmatic accreditor named on the program pages in this list Rows here
Georgia Institute of Technology Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) None named for these three online degrees 3
The University of Texas at Austin Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) None named for these three online degrees 3
Western Governors University Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) ACBSP for business, CCNE for nursing, CAEP and AAQEP for the Teachers College 5
Arkansas State University Higher Learning Commission (HLC) AACSB for the Neil Griffin College of Business, CSWE for the MSW, CAEP for licensure programs, CAEMHSE for disaster preparedness 11
Fort Hays State University Higher Learning Commission (HLC), since 1915 Not stated on the pages used for these rows 3
Chadron State College Higher Learning Commission (HLC) ACBSP for the MBA 2

Two practical notes. First, a school being institutionally accredited does not mean every one of its programs carries the professional accreditation a licensing board wants, so if you intend to sit a licensure exam, check the board's own list before the university's. Second, an accreditor's recognition status can change, which is why the table names accreditors instead of asserting a permanent quality grade. Look the school up in the federal database rather than trusting a logo.

How should I read online program rankings next to this table?

Rankings and prices answer different questions, and confusing them is how people end up paying $40,000 for a program they picked because it was ranked above one costing $12,000.

U.S. News released its 2026 Best Online Programs rankings on 27 January 2026 and says it assessed nearly 1,850 online bachelor's and master's degree programs, ranking the majority of them. The publisher states that these rankings do not use standardized test scores or first-year full-time graduation rates, and instead rely on faculty credentials and training, the services and technology available to students, student engagement, and expert opinion on the academic quality of programs. Master's programs are additionally assessed on student excellence measured through undergraduate GPAs, acceptance rates and work experience. Graduate programs are grouped into non-MBA business, criminal justice, information technology, education, engineering and nursing, with online MBA programs ranked separately. Blended programs that require recurring in-person attendance are not eligible.

Notice what is not in that list: tuition, fees, total cost, or debt at graduation. A rank is a statement about inputs and reputation, not about price. That is not a criticism of the methodology, it is a reason to keep two separate columns in your head. Read the methodology yourself at the source linked below rather than trusting a summary, including this one.

The other structural point is that eligibility shapes the field. A program that is predominantly online and asynchronous can be ranked; a program that is cheap because it is small and unpromoted may simply never have submitted a survey. Absence from a table is not evidence of anything. For the mechanics of how ranking inputs are collected and where the incentives sit, see how graduate school rankings are built, and for the parallel question at undergraduate level, what net price actually means is the same lesson with different numbers.

What are admissions actually like at the low end?

Cheap online master's programs are usually easier to get into than their on-campus equivalents, and the reasons are worth understanding before you write anything.

Rolling deadlines are the norm

Programs built around monthly or eight-week starts review applications continuously. Fort Hays State's catalog says MBA applications are accepted throughout the year with admissions made on a continual basis, and asks for materials at least 60 days before first enrollment. WGU starts terms on roughly the first of every month. That removes the single-deadline cliff, but it also means there is no advantage to waiting: apply when your file is complete.

Entrance exams are mostly gone at this price point

Every row in this explorer sits in the not-required chip, which is itself the finding. The University of Texas at Austin states that a GRE score is not required for admission to any of its online computer and data science programs and that GMAT scores are not accepted at all. Georgia Tech's OMS Analytics page states there is no GRE or GMAT requirement, and its OMS Cybersecurity page lists test scores as optional. Chadron State's MBA page says no GMAT is required. Fort Hays State's MBA admission list names an application, resume, transcripts, two letters and a personal statement, with no test. If you are deciding whether to sit an exam at all, whether you need to take the GRE walks through which programs still ask.

What replaces the exam is a GPA floor and sometimes a bridge

Arkansas State's online MBA asks for a bachelor's degree with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA or 2.75 in the last 60 hours, and offers a route for applicants below that line who submit a statement of purpose. Admitted students below 2.75 cumulative and 3.0 in the last 60 hours enter conditionally: a B or better in each of the first 9 graduate hours, and one course per seven-week session for the first two sessions. Arkansas State's MS in Engineering Management requires a calculus-equivalent course with a C or better, either before starting or before graduating. These prerequisite and conditional-admission rules are the real gate, and they are published, so read them.

Acceptance rates are rarely published per program

Few of these programs publish an online-specific acceptance rate, and the university-wide number does not describe them. Where a rate is not published, do not substitute a guess from a third-party site. Judge admission difficulty from the stated GPA floor and the prerequisite list instead, both of which are binding in a way a rate is not.

International applicants: three things to check before you pay

  1. Whether your home country recognizes the credential. Some ministries of education and professional bodies do not recognize degrees earned entirely by distance learning, or recognize them only from a published list of institutions. This is the single check most likely to make a cheap degree worthless to you, and it has nothing to do with U.S. accreditation. Ask your country's recognition authority in writing, name the specific university and program, and keep the reply.
  2. Which price applies to you. Residency changes the per-credit rate at some public universities and not at others. The University of Texas at Austin states that its online master's tuition is $10,000 regardless of residency status. Georgia Tech charges Georgia residents, other U.S. students and out-of-country students three different rates, and notes that students matriculating from Fall 2025 pay by residency. Georgia Tech's Fall 2026 schedule also lists an international student fee required of degree-seeking students holding an F or J visa in each term of enrollment, which does not apply to an online student living abroad but does apply if you are in the United States on one of those visas.
  3. The English test rule and its exemptions. The University of Texas at Austin's online programs require the TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic or Duolingo English Test, with exemptions for applicants from countries where English is the only official language and for holders of a bachelor's degree from such an institution, and it states the exemption is not extended to someone whose master's, but not bachelor's, came from one. Georgia Tech's OMSCS admission criteria require satisfactory TOEFL or IELTS Academic scores from international applicants. Check the exemption wording rather than the headline.

A fourth item is not a check but a warning: a fully online U.S. degree does not carry F-1 status, so it does not create a path to Optional Practical Training. If work authorization is part of why you want the degree, an online program is the wrong instrument regardless of price. If you are tracking how many credits you have banked toward a degree already, the degree audit credit tracker is a quicker way to see whether transfer credit shortens any of these totals.

Update log: what changed and which rows were re-verified

Questions students ask about cheap online master's degrees

What does verified mean on this page?

Every price here was read from the university's own bursar, tuition or program page on 8 September 2026, and every card links to the page it came from. If a number appeared only on a marketing page, a recruiter site or a third-party listing, the row was left out. Prices change between terms, so open the link before you apply.

Which is the cheapest online master's degree in this list?

At six credit hours per term the lowest computed total is the Georgia Tech Online MS in Computer Science: 30 credit hours at the Georgia resident rate of 227 dollars per credit hour, plus five terms of the 531 dollar mandatory fee, which is 9,465 dollars. Change the pace input and the order of the rows changes with it, because pace moves fees and term counts.

Does a low online master's tuition per credit always mean a low total?

No. A flat-rate term program charges the same amount whether you finish two courses or six, so its total depends on how many terms you take rather than on any per-credit price. A per-credit program with a large mandatory fee each term gets more expensive the longer you stretch it out. The explorer recomputes both and each card says which input moved its total.

Are cheap online master's programs still accredited?

Every school in this list holds institutional accreditation from an accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and the accreditation table names the accreditor for each one. Institutional accreditation is what makes credits transferable and the program eligible for federal aid. Programmatic accreditation is a separate check and it matters most in nursing, social work, teacher licensure and business.

Why are there no ranking numbers on this page?

Ranking tables are proprietary and this page does not reproduce them. A rank position also cannot tell you what a degree costs. For the 2026 Best Online Programs rankings released on 27 January 2026, U.S. News says it assessed nearly 1,850 online bachelor's and master's programs and used faculty credentials and training, services and technology available to students, student engagement and expert opinion on academic quality, plus undergraduate GPAs, acceptance rates and work experience for master's programs. Tuition is not on that list.
