How to Write a Methodology Chapter

A strong methodology chapter lets your reader understand exactly how you conducted your research and why your choices were justified. This is where you prove your work is rigorous and reproducible.

What the methodology chapter must justify

Your methodology chapter is a contract between you and your reader. You are saying: "Here is exactly what I did, here is why I did it that way, and here is why this approach answers my research question." Your committee will read this section to verify your work is sound, and future researchers will read it to understand whether and how to build on your findings.

Every methodology chapter must address these six core elements:

  • Research design and paradigm. What type of study is this (experimental, correlational, phenomenological, grounded theory, etc.)? What is your underlying philosophical stance, and how does it shape every choice below?
  • Participants, sample, and sampling method. Who or what is in your study? How many? How were they selected? What are the inclusion and exclusion criteria?
  • Materials, instruments, and measures. What tools, surveys, interviews, or data sources did you use? Where did they come from? How were they validated?
  • Procedure. What exactly did you do? In what sequence? How long did each step take? What happened to participants, and when?
  • Data analysis plan. How did you analyze the data? Which software, statistical tests, or coding approaches did you use, and why are they appropriate for your question?
  • Ethical considerations. How did you protect participant rights and data? What institutional approval did you obtain?

Quantitative vs qualitative vs mixed-methods skeletons

The order and emphasis of these elements differ by research approach. Below is the typical structure for each:

Justifying your choices, not just describing them

The most common weakness in methodology chapters is description without justification. Readers don't just want to know *what* you did—they want to know *why*, grounded in the literature and your research question.

Weak versus Strong

Weak (description only): "I selected 40 participants from the university registrar's database using convenience sampling."

Strong (justification + description): "I selected 40 participants from the university registrar's database using convenience sampling. Although convenience sampling introduces selection bias, it was appropriate here because my research question explores the lived experience of first-generation students in one institution, and I sought rich description rather than population generalizability (Lincoln & Guba, 1985). To strengthen credibility despite this limitation, I used maximum variation sampling—deliberately recruiting participants across different class years, majors, and residential status."

Notice the strong version:

  • States the choice (convenience sampling)
  • Names a potential weakness (selection bias)
  • Explains why it fits the research question and paradigm (exploratory, not generalizable)
  • Cites a methodological authority
  • Describes a compensatory strategy (maximum variation)

Apply this pattern to every major choice: your design, sample size, instruments, analysis approach, and any deviation from your original plan. Your committee is looking for *methodological reasoning*, not just a checklist.

Ethics and limitations

Two sections often get shortchanged but are non-negotiable:

Ethical considerations (within your methodology chapter or as a subsection):

  • Institutional Review Board (IRB) or ethics approval: statement that you obtained approval, the approval number, and the date
  • Informed consent: how participants learned about the study, what they were told, and how you obtained documented consent (or documented waiver, if applicable)
  • Confidentiality and data storage: how you kept data secure, how long you stored it, and how you anonymized it during analysis and reporting
  • Researcher bias and positionality (especially in qualitative research): any potential conflicts of interest or ways your identity might shape the research

Limitations (placement varies by program): Some programs place limitations at the end of the methodology chapter; others move them to the Discussion chapter. Check your handbook. Common limitations to address:

  • Sample size and representativeness
  • Selection bias or sampling method constraints
  • Instrument limitations (e.g., self-report bias, cultural limitations of a scale)
  • Generalizability (or intentional lack thereof in qualitative work)
  • Contextual factors (single institution, single time point, etc.)
  • Researcher bias or limitations in your positionality

Frame limitations matter-of-factly, not defensively. Every study has them. Readers trust researchers who name their boundaries.

Common mistakes

  1. Writing the methodology as a diary or narrative. "I then emailed the department chair. She replied within two days. I then contacted participants…" This reads like a log, not a research document. Write in past tense but in the third person or passive voice where appropriate: "Participants were contacted via email" instead of "I emailed the participants."
  2. Omitting a limitations section or treating it as an afterthought. Limitations are not confessions; they are evidence of rigor. A one-sentence statement ("This study was limited to one university") is insufficient. Name your key constraints and explain why they matter.
  3. No explanation of why this design fits your research question. The reader should never wonder "Why quantitative?" or "Why interviews?" Explicitly connect your methodological choices to what you are trying to understand or measure.
  4. Missing validity, reliability, or trustworthiness discussion. Quantitative researchers must address internal validity, external validity, and instrument reliability. Qualitative researchers must address credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability. Mixed-methods researchers must address both. This is not optional.
  5. Analysis plan vaguer than the analysis you actually ran. If your methods section says "I will use thematic analysis" but your results show you did open coding and then axial coding, you have a mismatch. Be specific enough that a reader could theoretically replicate your analytic steps.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use past or present tense in the methodology section?

Past tense for what you did: "Participants completed a questionnaire" or "Data were analyzed using thematic coding." Use present tense only for general truths or when describing an instrument's properties: "The Beck Depression Inventory measures depressive symptom severity across 21 items." When in doubt, check what your field and institution prefer, and stick to one tense throughout.

How detailed should I be when describing instruments or measures?

In the methodology chapter, include enough detail so the reader understands what you measured and why it is appropriate: number of items, subscales, scoring approach, validation history, and Cronbach's alpha or other reliability evidence if available. If the instrument is published and well-known (e.g., the DASS-21), a paragraph suffices. If it is a custom survey or interview guide you developed, include the full instrument in an appendix and describe your validation process in the methodology chapter.

Does my methodology chapter need a pilot study subsection?

Not necessarily, and conventions vary by field. If you conducted a pilot study to test procedures or refine instruments, you can describe it briefly in your methodology chapter or in a separate "Pilot Study" subsection. If you did not pilot-test, do not invent one. Some programs expect pilot work; others do not. Ask your advisor whether it is expected and, if so, where it should appear.

Where do I put IRB approval numbers and ethics clearance information?

Include your IRB approval number and approval date in your methodology chapter under an "Ethical Considerations" or "Approval" subsection. A typical statement: "This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of [University Name] on [Date], Protocol No. [Number]. All participants provided written informed consent." You may also include this in a footnote or acknowledgment in your front matter; check your program's style guide (APA, Chicago, etc.) and your graduate handbook.

How long should the methodology chapter be?

Length varies by discipline and study complexity. A straightforward quantitative study might need 10–15 pages; a complex qualitative study or mixed-methods design may need 20–30 pages. The rule is sufficiency: provide enough detail that someone with expertise in your field could understand and critically evaluate your approach. Check your graduate handbook for any page-count requirements, and ask your advisor what depth they expect.
