Chunking Technique: Group Information to Remember More

Your working memory holds just 7±2 pieces of information at once. But if you group those pieces into meaningful units—called "chunks"—you multiply what you can actually remember.

Tool 1: Chunk a String of Digits or Characters

Paste a long number (like a phone or ID) up to 24 characters, then split it into groups. You'll see side by side how the grouped version is easier to read and remember.

Miller's Magical Number Seven: The Science

In 1956, cognitive psychologist George A. Miller published a landmark paper titled "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information" in the journal Psychological Review.

Miller's research showed that across three different memory tasks—repeating digits aloud, identifying labels for stimuli, and quickly counting items—the human limit hovered around seven units of information, with a range of about five to nine, depending on the individual and task.

The key insight: chunking breaks this bottleneck. If you can group single items into meaningful units, those units count as one chunk. A phone number isn't eleven separate digits when you think of it as three chunks: area code, exchange, line number. The digits don't disappear; your brain treats them as a unified whole.

Update: Later research by Nelson Cowan (2001) revised Miller's estimate downward to about 3–4 chunks when you account for rehearsal strategies. But the chunking principle holds: more meaningful grouping = more information remembered.
