The Five R's of Cornell Note-Taking

Walter Pauk's Cornell method is built around five interconnected steps that move you from passive recording to active recall and lasting retention.

1. Record

Capture ideas during class

Write down key concepts, examples, and facts in the wide notes column. Use abbreviations, bullet points, and your own words. Leave plenty of white space—you can add details later.

2. Reduce/Question

Distill the main points

As soon as possible after class, review your notes. Write questions or cues in the narrow left column that prompt recall of the concepts in the notes area. This step forces you to identify what's truly important.

3. Recite

Test yourself with the cues

Cover the notes column with a sheet of paper. Read each cue or question and try to explain the concept from memory. Uncover your notes to check your answer. This is where deep learning happens.

4. Reflect

Think about the meaning

Write a 2–3 sentence summary at the bottom of the page that ties the lecture together. Include your own thinking: What surprised you? How does it connect to other topics? This cements understanding.

5. Review

Revisit regularly

Don't cram. Return to these notes weekly or before an exam. Each time you recite using the cues, you strengthen your memory. Spaced repetition is how facts become knowledge.

The Three Sections Explained

Left Column: The Cue Column

Roughly 2.5 inches wide, reserved for questions, keywords, and cues that prompt recall. Add these after you've finished recording. The cue column is your study tool: cover it when reviewing, answer from memory, then check your notes.

Right Column: The Notes Area

About 6 inches wide—roughly twice the cue column. This is where you record during class: facts, examples, diagrams, definitions. Write in a way that makes sense to you. Abbreviate. Bullet points are fine. Leave white space so you're not staring at a wall of text.

Bottom: The Summary

Reserve about 2 inches (roughly 7 ruled lines) at the bottom of every page. After class, write a 2–3 sentence summary that ties the page together. This is not a repeat of the notes; it's your synthesis. What was the main takeaway? How does it fit into the bigger picture?

How to Use the Cue Column for Self-Testing

The cue column is what makes Cornell notes so effective for learning. Here's the workflow:

  1. During class: Focus on the notes column. Write down what the instructor says. Don't try to be perfect—speed and coverage matter more.
  2. Within 24 hours: Review your notes. In the cue column, write questions or keywords that will trigger your memory of each section. "What are the three causes of X?" "Define photosynthesis." Make these specific and testable.
  3. Self-test: Cover the notes column with a sheet of paper. Look only at the cues. Answer from memory. Check yourself. If you got it wrong or fuzzy, write a clearer note or a better cue question.
  4. Weekly review: Every few days or weekly, repeat step 3. Each time you recall the information, you strengthen it.

This is active recall—the most efficient way to move information into long-term memory. Many students convert their cue column directly into flashcards for extra drilling.

When Cornell Notes Are Not the Right Tool

Cornell notes work brilliantly for most lectures and reading, but a few contexts call for a different approach:

  • Heavy math and derivations. If you're working through multi-step proofs or complex calculations, you need more space to write out your work. A single blank page or a whiteboard is often better. You can photograph or scan the work and reference it later.
  • Live coding and technical demos. Watching someone type code and trying to transcribe it at the same time usually fails. Instead, focus on understanding the logic and the big picture. Write down key concepts, library names, and command syntax. Get the code afterward (repo link, GitHub Gist, course notes) and study it line by line.
  • Rapid-fire problem sets or workshops. If the class is mostly solving problems in real time, Cornell notes can feel forced. Use a study guide to organize your solutions after the session, or just keep notes on what tripped you up and why.

Can I use A4 or international paper sizes?

Yes. The standard Cornell template is designed for 8.5 × 11" (US Letter), but the proportions scale well to A4 and other sizes. The key principle is: cue column about one-third of the page width, notes column about two-thirds, and 2 inches (or roughly 7 lines) reserved for the summary at the bottom. When you print, make sure your printer is set to 100% scale—otherwise the proportions shift.

Can I type my notes on a computer instead of handwriting?

You can, but handwriting has advantages. Research suggests that writing by hand forces you to be more selective (you can't transcribe everything), and the act of handwriting itself aids memory. That said, if typing works for your learning style, the structure of Cornell notes is what matters—left column for cues, right column for notes, bottom for summary. Try both and see which helps you remember more.

How do I convert my cue column into flashcards?

Each cue or question on the left becomes the front of a card; the corresponding notes on the right become the back. You can do this by hand (index cards), digitally using a flashcard app, or by photographing your Cornell notes and uploading them to a spaced-repetition tool like Anki. The one-to-one mapping makes this conversion straightforward.

What's the best way to store and review my Cornell notes?

Keep them in a binder or folder organized by subject and date. When you review, work through them actively using the cue-column method (cover the notes, answer the cues, check yourself). Don't just read them passively. Some students photograph their notes for backup or to review on a phone or tablet, which can work well for spaced repetition.

Does the print version save as a PDF?

Yes. Click the Print button. In the browser's print dialog, choose "Save as PDF" as your destination instead of a printer. The PDF will preserve the layout and ruling lines. Make sure "Background graphics" is enabled if you want the lines to appear in the saved PDF.

Should I use different paper or notebooks for Cornell notes?

Standard lined or blank paper works fine. Some students prefer graph paper for a fine grid, but the Cornell method doesn't require it. A single blank notebook or a loose-leaf binder works just as well as a specialized Cornell notebook. The system, not the paper, is what makes the difference.
