College Rankings by Major Don't Exist. Here's What to Check Instead.

U.S. News runs undergraduate program rankings for six fields (business, computer science, economics, engineering, nursing, psychology), built from peer opinion surveys, not outcomes. For every other major, no comparable list exists. Why doesn't a college's overall rank tell you about your major?

A college's overall rank is one number built by adding up institution-wide measurements and running them through a formula. In the 2026 U.S. News National Universities ranking, "student outcomes" alone is worth 52% of the total score, and every input inside that 52% is a campus-wide average: one six-year graduation rate for the entire undergraduate class, one first-year retention rate, one aggregate figure for graduate debt. None of it is computed per department. The rest of the formula splits across a reputation survey of presidents, provosts, and admissions deans (who are rating the institution's overall standing, not sitting in on your major's seminars), plus spending ratios, admitted-student test scores, and a research-output measure that also gets tallied at the institution level, not the department level. The mechanism is arithmetic, not conspiracy: a rank has to reduce a school to one sortable number, so every input gets averaged across every major on campus before it reaches the formula. A school with forty undergraduate majors produces one graduation rate, not forty. If your major is unusually strong, or unusually thin, relative to the rest of that campus, the aggregate hides it in either direction. A school can rank in the top 20 overall while a specific department runs on two full-time faculty, and a school ranked well outside the top 100 can run one of the stronger undergraduate programs in your field. The composite score was never built to answer the question you're actually asking. What are college rankings by major, actually?

A handful of undergraduate rankings by major do exist, and it matters to know exactly how they're built before you read one. As of the 2026 cycle, U.S. News publishes undergraduate program rankings for six fields only: business, computer science, economics, engineering (split into two separate lists depending on whether the school offers an engineering doctorate), nursing, and psychology. Every one of those six lists is built the same way: in spring and summer of the prior year, U.S. News surveys deans and senior faculty at accredited programs and asks them to rate the academic quality of peer programs they're familiar with, on a five-point scale running from "marginal" to "outstanding." The scores are averaged with a trimmed mean (the two highest and two lowest ratings dropped, to blunt outliers), and a program needs at least ten ratings surviving that trim to be ranked at all. That's the entire methodology: professional opinion about reputation, refreshed once a year alongside the main Best Colleges release. There is no graduation-rate input, no earnings input, and no course-count input anywhere in that formula. If your major isn't one of those six, there is no U.S. News undergraduate list for it, full stop. QS and Times Higher Education publish subject rankings that cover far more fields, but read the fine print: those lists are dominated by research citation counts and an academic and employer reputation survey aimed at graduate study and faculty output, not the undergraduate classroom, and a school's placement reflects its faculty's publication record in that field, not how many sections of the intro sequence it runs or how well it teaches them. Graduate program rankings (medical school, law school, MBA, PhD programs) are a different animal again: those formulas blend research spending, placement outcomes, and admissions selectivity for a population of students who are not you, an incoming undergraduate. None of these substitute for checking the department itself, which is what the rest of this page walks through.

STEP 1 · CHECK

Does a ranking for your major even exist?

Before trusting any "best colleges for [major]" page, find out whether it's one of the six U.S. News peer-assessment fields, a QS or THE subject list, or an unaffiliated "best of" roundup assembled by a media site or an affiliate marketer paid per click. Read the methodology section before the results table. A list with no visible methodology page, no named data source, and heavy advertising for online-degree programs isn't measuring anything: it's monetizing a search query. Most "best colleges for biology" or "best colleges for graphic design" pages you'll find fall into exactly that category, because no credible publisher runs a ranking for those fields at all, so someone built a plausible-looking substitute.

STEP 2 · COUNT

How many degrees does the department actually award?

Pull one number before anything else: how many bachelor's degrees the department conferred in your exact major last year. This is public, exact, and it tells you the department's real size in a way faculty headcounts on a website never do. A program awarding fourteen bachelor's degrees a year in your CIP code runs on a small number of faculty and a tight rotation of required courses; you'll likely take every upper-division class the department offers, whether you want to or not. A program awarding two hundred a year has the enrollment to run multiple concentrations, multiple sections at different times, and electives that come and go with less friction. Neither number is automatically better (fourteen a year can mean close faculty attention; two hundred a year can mean crowded intro sections), but it changes what you should ask next, and it's a number no institutional rank will ever show you broken out by major.

What do graduates in this exact major actually earn?

College Scorecard publishes median earnings broken out by field of study, at the institution level, keyed to a 4-digit CIP code. As of the field of study data documentation (last updated June 2024), the earnings cohort is restricted to people who received federal financial aid, were working, and were not enrolled in school when their earnings were measured, with the furthest-out figure Scorecard currently publishes covering the fourth full calendar year after completion; the exact completion years pooled into that cohort roll forward with each annual data refresh, so check the vintage noted on the site itself rather than assuming it matches what you read here. Two things to know before you read a single figure. First, the Department protects small programs from disclosure using a noise-based, differentially private method rather than a simple headcount cutoff, and it eliminates cases from small cells outright before that; in practice this means a meaningful share of programs, especially small ones, show "PrivacySuppressed" instead of a number. Second, and this is the point of the chart below: the spread in earnings across different majors at one school is often as large as, or larger than, the spread in earnings for one major across different schools. A Brookings analysis of Scorecard data (published February 2024) found that moving from a major with low Pell-recipient enrollment to one with high Pell enrollment was associated with roughly a $32,000 earnings gap, more than four times the average earnings gap between Pell and non-Pell students overall. These three figures are illustrative, built to show a shape, not pulled from any real institution's Scorecard record. CIP codes are real (11.0701 Computer Science, 26.0101 Biology General, 13.1202 Elementary Education); the dollar amounts are example numbers only. Look up your own school's actual field-of-study earnings at collegescorecard.ed.gov: a roughly two-times gap between the highest- and lowest-earning major on one campus shows up constantly in the real data, even though the exact figures vary by school and by year.

STEP 4 · AUDIT

How many upper-division courses actually run?

Degree counts and earnings tell you about the department's output. This step tells you about its actual teaching capacity, right now, in the specific subfield inside the major you care about, algorithms and systems inside a computer science major, say, or developmental psychology inside a psychology major. Pull up the current course catalog and count the upper-division (usually 300- and 400-level) courses listed in that subfield. Then pull the class schedule archive for the last four semesters, two academic years, and check how many of those catalog listings actually ran with real enrollment, rather than sitting on the books unoffered. A catalog can list fifteen courses in a subfield; if only four of them appeared on an actual schedule in the last two years, the other eleven are aspirational. This is the number that predicts whether you'll get to take the specific classes you enrolled in this major to take, and no ranking, department-level or otherwise, captures it.

STEP 5 · VERIFY

Is the program accredited, and does the absence matter?

Programmatic accreditation, a subject-specific seal separate from the institution's regional accreditation (see how to check institutional accreditation itself), exists for some majors and not others, and the recognized accreditor is field-specific: ABET for engineering and computing programs, through its Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computing, and Applied and Natural Science commissions; CCNE, ACEN, or CNEA for nursing; CAEP for teacher preparation; and AACSB, ACBSP, or IACBE for business, among others. ABET accreditation is granted program by program, not to the whole school, so a university can have an ABET-accredited mechanical engineering program and an unaccredited biomedical engineering program at the same time. Always search the accreditor's own database for the exact program name and degree level; never assume institutional accreditation carries over.

Whether the absence matters depends entirely on the field. In engineering, missing ABET accreditation is close to disqualifying in the U.S., since it underlies the FE/PE licensure pathway in most states and many employers' new-grad pipelines. In nursing, missing accreditation from one of the three recognized bodies can block eligibility to sit for the NCLEX licensing exam in some states. In business, it's closer to the opposite: AACSB accreditation is the most selective of the three recognized business accreditors, but most business programs, including many solid ones, are not AACSB accredited, so its absence there is common and not by itself disqualifying. Check which kind of field you're in before you treat a missing seal as a red flag.

STEP 6 · INSPECT

Is there real research and internship infrastructure?

Two more things to check, both free and both public. First, the institution's Carnegie Research Activity Designation. The 2025 revision replaced the old, more ambiguous R1/R2 process with fixed thresholds: Research 1 now means at least $50 million in annual research spending and at least 70 research doctorates awarded per year (187 U.S. institutions clear that bar); Research 2 means at least $5 million in spending and 20 research doctorates (139 institutions). A new category, Research Colleges and Universities (RCU), covers 216 schools that spend at least $2.5 million on research annually but don't grant many, or any, doctorates, which matters for undergraduate research access at schools that never chased the R1 label. Second, ask a narrower and more useful question than the institution-wide label: do undergraduates in this specific department appear as named co-authors on published papers, and is there a structured pipeline, a co-op program, a paid internship placement office specific to the major, or a funded Research Experience for Undergraduates site, rather than a vague promise that "research opportunities are available." A department's faculty pages listing recent publications with undergraduate co-authors, or a co-op office that will show you a placement rate, tells you more than the school's overall Carnegie tier.

STEP 7 · ASK

What should you ask the department directly?

After steps one through six, you'll have real numbers and, usually, one or two gaps only the department can fill. Email the undergraduate coordinator or department chair, not general admissions, with closed-ended, specific questions rather than one open-ended one. Specific questions get specific answers, and they signal you've done homework, which tends to get you a real reply instead of a form letter.   1. "How many students graduated with this major in [most recent year], and how many faculty currently teach the required upper-division courses?"
  2. "Which of the [subfield] courses listed in the catalog actually ran in the last two academic years, and which are on hold or offered infrequently?"
  3. "Do undergraduates in this department typically get named as co-authors on faculty research or placed in a structured internship or co-op, and can you point me to a recent example?"

Send it after you've already done steps two and four yourself. If the reply contradicts the public numbers, that gap is itself useful information.

How do you compare three schools on one page?

The seven checks above work one school at a time. Before a campus visit, or before you spend money on an application fee, it helps to see three schools side by side on one sheet: which ones you've actually finished checking, and which of the three numbers, degree output, field earnings, upper-division course count, is furthest apart between them. When does the overall ranking actually matter for a major?

Two narrow situations are the exception, and both have limits worth naming.

Case 1

Your major has no distinct undergraduate identity of its own

An individualized or general studies degree, a broad liberal-arts track with no required sequence beyond general education, or a first-year "undeclared" enrollment. If there's no department-level curriculum to separate from the institution, what you're actually buying is the school's general resources: its library, its advising, its breadth of electives, its overall academic culture, and the overall rank is a reasonable, if blunt, proxy for those.

Limit: the moment you declare a specific major with its own required sequence, this stops applying, and the seven steps above take over.

Case 2

Your major is a launching pad into an unrelated field

Pre-med, pre-law, or any track where the next gatekeeper, a medical school admissions committee, a law school, a generalist campus recruiter, weighs the institution's overall selectivity and reputation because they aren't evaluating your department, they're using the school's name as a broadly recognized signal about the rigor behind your GPA.

Limit: this covers the gatekeeper's later use of the degree, not your four years inside it. You'll still sit in that department's classrooms, so steps two through six above remain worth checking even when the school's overall name is doing real work for your next application.

Is there an official ranking of colleges by major?

What is a CIP code, and why does it matter for comparing majors?

A CIP code, Classification of Instructional Programs, is the federal government's standard six-digit code for a specific academic program, the same code IPEDS, College Scorecard, and most institutional research offices use to tag your exact major. Two schools can call the same program different names, Computer Science versus Computing Science, but the CIP code lets you confirm they're reporting the same field, and it's the code you plug into IPEDS and College Scorecard to pull degree counts and earnings for that specific major rather than the department's other unrelated programs.
