Programmatic accreditor lookup
Programmatic accreditation by major: does yours have an accreditor?
Matches field names and common abbreviations. 44 fields, hand-checked against each accreditor's own directory on 8 September 2026.
Roughly half of college majors have a program-level accreditor and half do not. Of the 44 fields below, 23 sit behind an accreditor that normally gates a licence or licensing exam, 7 depend on which state you practise in, and 14 have no licence attached at all. Find your major, then read the box on the right of its row.
How do I look up my major's programmatic accreditor?
Type a major above, narrow by field group, or switch on the licence filter to collapse the list to the fields where accreditation can actually end a career. Everything runs in your browser: nothing is sent anywhere, and the page works with JavaScript off, just without the filtering.

Engineering, computing and the built environment 8
Civil Engineering
- ABET EAC ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission Directory
The EAC accredits engineering programs at bachelor and master level. ABET does not accredit doctoral programs.
Without it You can still graduate and work, but the standard route to a Professional Engineer licence closes, and PE sign-off authority is what lets a civil engineer stamp drawings.
Mechanical Engineering
- ABET EAC ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission Directory
The EAC accredits engineering programs at bachelor and master level.
Without it Non-EAC graduates in most states face a longer experience requirement before they can sit the PE exam, and some employers screen for ABET on the first pass.
Electrical and Computer Engineering
- ABET EAC ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission Directory
The EAC accredits electrical, computer and related engineering programs at bachelor and master level. Some computer engineering degrees are accredited by ABET's Computing Accreditation Commission instead: check which one your program holds.
Without it The PE route narrows. Electrical PE licensure matters most in power, utilities and building systems work, less in chip design.
Chemical Engineering
- ABET EAC ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission Directory
The EAC accredits chemical engineering programs at bachelor and master level.
Without it The PE route narrows, which matters for process safety and consulting roles that require a licensed engineer of record.
Biomedical Engineering
- ABET EAC ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission Directory
The EAC accredits biomedical and bioengineering programs at bachelor and master level.
Without it Fewer biomedical engineers pursue a PE than civil engineers do, so the practical damage is smaller. It still closes the standard licence route and is noticed by graduate admissions committees.
Engineering Technology
- ABET ETAC ABET Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission Directory
The ETAC accredits engineering technology programs at associate and bachelor level. This is a different commission from the EAC, and the two are not interchangeable on a licence application.
Without it This is the single most common accreditation surprise in engineering. An ETAC-accredited bachelor's degree is not an EAC-accredited bachelor's degree, and the difference shows up years later at the licensing board.
Computer Science
- ABET CAC ABET Computing Accreditation Commission Directory
The CAC accredits computing programs at associate, bachelor and master level, including computer science, information systems, information technology and cybersecurity.
Without it Nothing legal. No US state licenses software developers. ABET accreditation in computing is a hiring and transfer signal, and some federal and defence employers use it as a screen, but it does not gate a credential.
Architecture
- NAAB National Architectural Accrediting Board Directory
NAAB accredits professional degree programs in architecture: the B.Arch, M.Arch and D.Arch. As of September 2026 NAAB lists 180 accredited programs at 142 institutions.
Without it A four-year pre-professional architecture degree is not a NAAB-accredited professional degree. Students routinely discover this after graduating and have to add a two- or three-year M.Arch.
Health professions 12
Nursing (BSN)
- CCNE Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Directory
- ACEN Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing Directory
More than one accreditor covers this field. Holding any one of them is normally sufficient, but you have to confirm which one your target board or graduate program accepts.
CCNE accredits baccalaureate, master's, DNP and residency programs only. ACEN accredits practical, diploma, associate, baccalaureate, master's and clinical doctorate programs. A BSN can hold either.
Without it Your NCLEX eligibility usually survives, because that is a state board of nursing decision. What breaks is graduate admission: most MSN and DNP programs require a BSN from a nationally accredited program, and many hospital tuition benefits and federal nursing employers use the same filter.
Nursing (ADN, diploma and practical)
- ACEN Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing Directory
ACEN's program search covers practical, diploma, associate, baccalaureate, master's, clinical doctorate and transition-to-practice programs. CCNE does not accredit at these levels, so an ADN cannot hold CCNE accreditation.
Without it An unaccredited ADN is the classic dead end for RN-to-BSN transfer. Many RN-to-BSN bridges will not accept credit from a program that was never nationally accredited, so the two years have to be repeated.
Nurse Practitioner and other APRN roles
- CCNE Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Directory
- ACEN Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing Directory
- COA Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs Directory
More than one accreditor covers this field. Holding any one of them is normally sufficient, but you have to confirm which one your target board or graduate program accepts.
CCNE and ACEN accredit graduate nursing programs; the COA accredits nurse anesthesia programs specifically, at master's, doctoral and post-master's certificate level.
Without it Advanced practice licensure runs through national certification, and the certifying bodies are built around accredited graduate programs. A non-accredited MSN is the one nursing credential that can leave you unable to certify at all.
Physical Therapy
- CAPTE Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education Directory
CAPTE grants specialised accreditation to entry-level education programs for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.
Without it There is no alternative route. A DPT from a non-CAPTE program does not lead to a licence in any state, so the degree has essentially no professional use.
Occupational Therapy
- ACOTE Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education Directory
ACOTE accredits occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant programs at associate, master's and doctoral level.
Without it The national certification examination is closed to graduates of non-accredited programs, and every state licence is downstream of that certification.
Pharmacy
- ACPE Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Directory
ACPE accredits Doctor of Pharmacy programs, plus pharmacy technician education and continuing education providers.
Without it A PharmD from a non-accredited program will not get you to the licensure examination. Foreign-trained pharmacists have a separate equivalency route; a domestic unaccredited program has none.
Physician Assistant
- ARC-PA Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant Directory
ARC-PA is the sole accrediting agency for physician assistant educational programs in the United States.
Without it The national certifying examination is restricted to graduates of ARC-PA accredited programs, and every state licence requires that certification. An unaccredited PA program is unusable.
Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
- CAA Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (ASHA) Directory
The CAA accredits graduate programs in audiology and in speech-language pathology. Undergraduate communication sciences and disorders programs are not accredited by the CAA, which surprises applicants.
Without it The clinical certificate that most employers and school districts require is built on a CAA-accredited graduate degree. Without it the certification route closes and most state licences follow.
Athletic Training
- CAATE Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education Directory
CAATE accredits professional, post-professional and residency programs in athletic training. The professional degree moved to master's level, so an undergraduate athletic training major is no longer the entry route.
Without it You cannot sit the certification examination, and almost every state regulates athletic training practice on the basis of that certification.
Nutrition and Dietetics
- ACEND Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics Directory
ACEND accredits didactic programs, coordinated programs, dietetic internships and graduate programs leading to the registered dietitian nutritionist credential.
Without it A nutrition degree from a non-ACEND program does not lead to the RDN credential. It can still lead to unregulated 'nutritionist' work, which is a much narrower job market and, in several states, a legally restricted title.
Medical Laboratory Science
- NAACLS National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences Directory
NAACLS accredits and approves programs in medical laboratory science, medical laboratory technology, phlebotomy, cytogenetics and related areas.
Without it Certification is the practical gate. Most employers hire certified technologists, and the cleanest certification route runs through a NAACLS program; the alternative experience routes are slower and narrower.
Public Health
- CEPH Council on Education for Public Health Directory
CEPH accredits schools of public health and standalone public health programs at bachelor's and graduate level.
Without it No licence is lost. What is lost is eligibility for some federal fellowships and a clean path to the voluntary Certified in Public Health credential, plus the doctoral admissions signal.
Law and medicine 5
Law (JD)
- ABA American Bar Association Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar Directory
The ABA maintains the list of approved law schools. A small number of states, California most visibly, allow bar admission from state-accredited or unaccredited law schools under extra conditions.
Without it In most states a degree from a non-ABA-approved law school makes you ineligible to sit the bar at all. This is not a slower route: it is a closed door in the large majority of jurisdictions.
Medicine (MD)
- LCME Liaison Committee on Medical Education Directory
The LCME accredits complete and independent MD programs whose students are geographically located in the United States and Canada. It does not accredit MD programs outside that area.
Without it Without LCME accreditation the entire domestic pipeline closes: no USMLE, no ACGME residency, no board certification. International medical graduates use a separate ECFMG certification route; a non-accredited US program has no equivalent.
Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
- COCA American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation Directory
COCA is the accrediting body for colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States.
Without it Same shape as the MD case: licensing examination eligibility and residency entry both run through the accredited degree. There is no workaround.
Dentistry
- CODA Commission on Dental Accreditation Directory
CODA is the national programmatic accrediting agency for dental and dental-related education, covering predoctoral DDS and DMD programs, advanced dental education and allied dental programs such as dental hygiene. As of September 2026 CODA reports evaluating more than 1,400 programs.
Without it State dental boards license from CODA-accredited programs. Dental hygiene is included, which catches students who assume only the dental degree itself is regulated.
Veterinary Medicine
- AVMA COE American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education Directory
The AVMA Council on Education accredits colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States and abroad. Veterinary technology programs are accredited separately by the AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities.
Without it The national veterinary licensing examination and every state licence run through the accredited degree. Graduates of non-accredited foreign schools need a separate equivalency programme.
Education, social work and psychology 6
Social Work
- CSWE Council on Social Work Education Commission on Accreditation Directory
CSWE accredits baccalaureate, master's and practice doctorate social work programs. Its directory on 8 September 2026 listed 1,211 entries, of which 899 were Accredited, 63 in Candidacy and 29 in Pre-Candidacy, across 763 baccalaureate, 433 master's and 15 practice doctorate listings.
Without it Two things break at once. Nearly every state ties social work licensure to a CSWE-accredited degree, and advanced-standing MSW admission, the one-year MSW, is normally restricted to graduates of CSWE-accredited BSW programs. A non-accredited BSW costs you both the licence route and the shortcut.
Teacher Education
- CAEP Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation Directory
- AAQEP Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation Directory
More than one accreditor covers this field. Holding any one of them is normally sufficient, but you have to confirm which one your target board or graduate program accepts.
CAEP accredits educator preparation providers offering bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees and post-baccalaureate programs leading to certification, licensure or endorsement. AAQEP is a second recognised option that many providers now hold instead.
Without it The gate that actually stops you is state program approval, not national accreditation. A state-approved but non-CAEP program licenses fine in its own state; a program with neither is unusable, and out-of-state reciprocity gets harder without one.
Clinical and Counseling Psychology (doctoral)
- APA CoA American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation Directory
- PCSAS Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System Directory
More than one accreditor covers this field. Holding any one of them is normally sufficient, but you have to confirm which one your target board or graduate program accepts.
The APA Commission on Accreditation is the recognised accreditor for doctoral programs, internships and postdoctoral residencies in health service psychology. PCSAS is a separate recognised accreditor for clinical science doctoral programs.
Without it Psychology has two accreditation gates, not one: the doctoral program and the predoctoral internship. Students match into unaccredited internships every year and only then discover that several state boards and most federal employers will not count them.
Psychology (BA or BS)
No programmatic accreditor for this field.
There is no programmatic accreditor for an undergraduate psychology major. The institution's own accreditation is the only accreditation involved.
Without it Nothing, at this level. The accreditation questions in psychology all begin at the doctoral program and the internship, which is why a strong undergraduate record and research experience matter more than any programmatic badge.
Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling
- CACREP Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs Directory
- MPCAC Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council Directory
More than one accreditor covers this field. Holding any one of them is normally sufficient, but you have to confirm which one your target board or graduate program accepts.
CACREP accredits master's and doctoral counseling programs; MPCAC is a second recognised accreditor for master's programs in psychology and counseling.
Without it The number of states requiring a CACREP degree for the counseling licence has been rising, and federal employers moved first. A non-accredited master's can license in one state and be worthless in the next.
Applied Behavior Analysis
- ABAI Association for Behavior Analysis International Accreditation Board Directory
The ABAI Accreditation Board accredits bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs in behaviour analysis. A separate verified-course-sequence route also exists and is what many programs actually hold.
Without it Board certification is the credential employers and insurers pay for. Coursework that is neither accredited nor part of a verified course sequence does not count toward it, and the money is simply gone.
Business 2
Business Administration and Management
- AACSB AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) Directory
- ACBSP Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs Directory
- IACBE International Accreditation Council for Business Education Directory
More than one accreditor covers this field. Holding any one of them is normally sufficient, but you have to confirm which one your target board or graduate program accepts.
Three recognised business accreditors, held at school level rather than per major. On 8 September 2026 AACSB's directory listed 1,093 accredited business schools, 194 of which also hold the supplemental accounting accreditation. IACBE reports 230+ institutions and 2,000+ accredited programs.
Without it No licence, no exam, no legal consequence. What business accreditation changes is credit transfer between business schools, some MBA admissions filters, and a share of campus recruiting. It does not change whether your degree is legal to use.
Accounting
- AACSB AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) Directory
- ACBSP Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs Directory
- IACBE International Accreditation Council for Business Education Directory
More than one accreditor covers this field. Holding any one of them is normally sufficient, but you have to confirm which one your target board or graduate program accepts.
AACSB offers a supplemental accounting accreditation on top of its business accreditation; 194 of its 1,093 accredited schools held it on 8 September 2026.
Without it The CPA gate is credit hours and specific course content set by your state board of accountancy, not programmatic accreditation. Students lose CPA eligibility over course-count arithmetic far more often than over accreditation.
Arts and design 5
Art and Design
- NASAD National Association of Schools of Art and Design Directory
NASAD is an institutional membership accreditor founded in 1944 with approximately 318 accredited institutional members as of September 2026, and it approves the specific curricular programs listed for each member.
Without it No licence is involved, so the consequence is quieter and slower: studio credit transfers badly between non-accredited and accredited schools, and MFA admissions committees read the accreditation of your undergraduate institution as a proxy for how many contact hours your studio courses actually carried.
Music
- NASM National Association of Schools of Music Directory
NASM was founded in 1924 and has approximately 597 accredited institutional members as of September 2026, with curricular programs approved individually.
Without it Graduate music programs and conservatories weigh NASM status when reading an unfamiliar transcript, and music education students may hit a second problem: the teaching licence runs through the state's educator preparation approval, not through NASM.
Theatre
- NAST National Association of Schools of Theatre Directory
NAST accredits institutions and approves their theatre curricular programs, on the same model as NASM and NASAD.
Without it Transfer and graduate admission again. There is no theatre licence, and casting has never looked at accreditation.
Interior Design
- CIDA Council for Interior Design Accreditation Directory
CIDA accredits interior design programs at bachelor's and master's level.
Without it Interior design is the field students most often mistake for unregulated. Several states register or license interior designers, and the professional qualification examination has education requirements that a non-accredited degree may not satisfy.
Landscape Architecture
- LAAB Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (American Society of Landscape Architects) Directory
LAAB accredits first-professional bachelor's and master's programs in landscape architecture.
Without it Landscape architecture is licensed in most states, and the education requirement normally means an accredited first-professional degree. Students who assume it works like graphic design get this badly wrong.
Sciences and liberal arts 3
Biology
No programmatic accreditor for this field.
There is no programmatic accreditor for an undergraduate biology major. Institutional accreditation is the only accreditation that applies.
Without it Nothing. If you are using biology as a pre-health track, the accreditation that matters is the professional school's: look up Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Physician Assistant instead.
Economics
No programmatic accreditor for this field.
No programmatic accreditor. If the economics degree is housed in a business school, the school may hold AACSB, ACBSP or IACBE accreditation, but that is a school-level badge and not economics-specific.
Without it Nothing. Economics has no licence and no programmatic accreditation regime; graduate admission runs on mathematics coursework and letters.
History, English and other liberal arts
No programmatic accreditor for this field.
No programmatic accreditor. These fields are covered entirely by the institution's own accreditation.
Without it Nothing at degree level. The accreditation question returns later if you go into teaching, law or social work: look those up separately.
Other applied fields 3
Journalism and Mass Communication
- ACEJMC Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications Directory
ACEJMC accredits journalism and mass communication units at the school or department level. Most US journalism programs are not accredited, and that is normal rather than alarming.
Without it Nothing legal, and less than in most fields even reputationally: newsrooms hire on clips. The main use of ACEJMC status is comparing two otherwise similar programs.
Public Administration and Public Policy
- NASPAA Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation Directory
NASPAA accredits master's programs in public policy, affairs and administration.
Without it No licence. NASPAA status matters mainly for federal and international hiring pipelines and for the Presidential Management Fellows style of recruitment, where the reviewer has to compare unfamiliar programs quickly.
Urban and Regional Planning
- PAB Planning Accreditation Board Directory
PAB accredits bachelor's and master's planning programs in the United States.
Without it Planning has no licence in most states, but the AICP professional certification has education and experience requirements that are shorter for graduates of accredited programs. A non-accredited degree makes certification slower, not impossible.
What does each field in the result mean?
A result row has two halves on purpose. The left side is factual: who accredits the field, what they accredit, and where their directory lives. The right side is consequential: what the accreditation is holding up. Colour on the right is driven by exactly one question, whether accreditation gates a licence, and never by how prestigious the accreditor is.
Accreditor and full legal name
The acronym plus the name the accreditor uses in law and in recognition lists. Schools sometimes cite a body's old name or an unrelated membership association; matching the full name is how you catch that.
What it covers
The degree levels the accreditor actually reaches. Several fields accredit graduate programs only, so an undergraduate major in the same department is outside the accreditor's scope by design, not by failure.
Directory link
Straight to the accreditor's own searchable list. This is the only authority. A school's claim on its own site is a claim, not a record.
Consequence box
One of three fixed states, plus a sentence naming the exact thing that is blocked: an exam, a licence application, a state approval, a transfer, an admission.
Worked example 1
Typing “social work”
One card comes back. The accreditor is CSWE, the Council on Social Work Education Commission on Accreditation, and the consequence box is red: gates a licence. On 8 September 2026 the CSWE directory held 1,211 listings, of which 899 were Accredited, 63 were in Candidacy and 29 in Pre-Candidacy, spread across 763 baccalaureate, 433 master's and 15 practice doctorate entries.
Two separate things ride on that accreditation. Licensing boards route social work applicants through the accredited-degree requirement, and advanced-standing MSW admission, the one-year master's, is normally reserved for graduates of accredited BSW programs. So a student who takes a non-accredited BSW loses the licence route and the shortcut in the same decision, and finds out two to four years later.
Practical move: open the CSWE directory, search your school by name, and confirm three things separately. The campus. The level, BSW or MSW. The status word, which must read Accredited rather than Candidacy.
Worked example 2
Typing “mechanical engineering technology”
The Engineering Technology row comes back, and the consequence box is amber rather than red. That amber is the whole point of the page. ABET runs four commissions, and two of them look almost identical from a brochure: the Engineering Accreditation Commission accredits engineering programs at bachelor and master level, while the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission accredits engineering technology programs at associate and bachelor level.
NCEES states that engineering licensing boards generally require PE candidates to hold a bachelor's degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program. ABET states that graduates of ABET-accredited bachelor-level engineering degree programs are eligible to become registered professional engineers in all US states and territories, while graduates of ABET-accredited bachelor-level engineering technology programs are eligible by the same process in many, but not all, states.
Both degrees are ABET-accredited. Both say so truthfully. Only one of them is accepted for PE licensure everywhere. If you intend to stamp drawings, the commission letters matter more than the school name, and ABET's program search shows which commission accredits any given program.
Worked example 3
Typing “graphic design” with the licence filter on
Zero results, and the page says why rather than showing an empty box. Graphic design sits inside the Art and Design row, whose accreditor is NASAD, and NASAD does not gate any licence. The empty state offers a one-click “show it anyway” that clears the filter and surfaces the row.
Read the row and the consequence is real but quieter. NASAD was founded in 1944 and has approximately 318 accredited institutional members as of September 2026, and it approves the specific curricular programs each member offers. Nothing about that stops you working as a designer; there is no licence to lose. What it changes is transfer credit, because studio hours travel badly between accredited and non-accredited schools, and MFA admissions, where an unfamiliar transcript gets read against the accreditation of the institution behind it.
The lesson generalises. “No licence involved” is not the same as “does not matter”. It means the damage from a non-accredited program is deferred and reversible rather than immediate and absolute.
Which engineering and computing majors need accredited programs?
ABET is one organisation with four separate accreditation commissions, and the commission is what decides the licence consequence. On its own accreditation page ABET states that, to date, 4,863 programs at 950 colleges and universities in 42 countries have received ABET accreditation. It also states plainly that it does not accredit certification, training or doctoral programs, which is why a PhD is never “ABET-accredited” no matter what a department says.
| Commission | Covers | Degree levels | Licence effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| EAC | Engineering programs | Bachelor, master | Standard education route to the PE licence in all states and territories |
| ETAC | Engineering technology programs | Associate, bachelor | PE eligible by the same FE and PE process in many, but not all, states |
| CAC | Computing programs | Associate, bachelor, master | None: no US state licenses software work |
| ANSAC | Applied and natural science programs | Associate, bachelor, master | Varies by field, most commonly none |
Read the licence effect column against a real timeline. A student who wants a PE typically needs an EAC-accredited bachelor's degree, then passes the FE exam, then works about four years under supervision, then sits the PE exam. NCEES notes that most states require four years of acceptable, progressive and verifiable work experience. That is roughly eight years between enrolling and licensure, which is why an ETAC-versus-EAC mix-up in freshman year does not surface until you are nearly thirty.
Computing is the opposite case, and worth saying clearly because it gets oversold. There is no software engineering licence in the United States, so a CAC-accredited computer science degree buys transfer portability and a hiring signal, not permission. If you are still weighing two engineering disciplines, the licence question is sharpest in civil versus mechanical engineering, where one field treats the PE as near-mandatory and the other treats it as optional.
Does my nursing or allied health program need to be accredited?
Health professions are where students most often assume one gate exists and discover there are two. In nursing, the state board of nursing approves a program so its graduates can sit the NCLEX. National accreditation is a separate, voluntary process, and it is the one graduate schools, the military and many hospital systems check. A program can hold board approval and no accreditation, which is legal and is exactly the configuration that traps RN-to-BSN transfers.
The two nursing accreditors are not interchangeable, and the difference is scope rather than quality. CCNE states that it ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate and residency or fellowship programs in nursing, and its directory search offers baccalaureate, master's, DNP, post-graduate APRN certificate and residency options. ACEN's program search covers practical, diploma, associate, baccalaureate, master's, clinical doctorate and transition-to-practice programs. So an associate degree in nursing can hold ACEN accreditation and cannot hold CCNE accreditation, and a school that markets its ADN as “CCNE” is describing something that does not exist.
The allied health pattern
Across physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, athletic training, dietetics and speech-language pathology, the shape repeats: a single national accreditor, a national certification or licensing exam restricted to graduates of accredited programs, and a state licence issued on the strength of that exam. The Board of Certification states that to attain BOC certification an individual must complete an entry-level athletic training education program accredited by CAATE and pass the BOC certification exam. That sentence, with different nouns, is the rule in most of these fields. It also means there is no remediation: an unaccredited allied health degree is not a slower route, it is no route.
Two more health-side traps are worth naming. First, the professional entry degree keeps moving upward, so an undergraduate major with the right name may no longer be the entry credential at all. Second, undergraduate feeder majors are almost never accredited: communication sciences and disorders, pre-nursing and pre-health biology have no programmatic accreditor, and the accreditation question belongs to the graduate program you apply to next. If you are choosing between the clinical routes, nursing versus pre-med lays out the timelines that sit under these accreditation decisions, and the nursing student resume bullet points guide shows how clinical placements from an accredited program get described to employers.
Does programmatic accreditation matter for a business degree?
Less than business schools imply, and the honest version is short. There are three recognised business accreditors, they accredit the school rather than your individual major, and none of them gates a licence, an exam, or your right to use the degree. On 8 September 2026 the AACSB accredited-school directory listed 1,093 schools, of which 194 also held the supplemental accounting accreditation. IACBE reports more than 230 institutions and more than 2,000 accredited programs. ACBSP accredits business programs at the associate through doctoral level.
What business accreditation does change: credit transfer between business schools, admission filters at some MBA programs, and the shortlist at a slice of campus recruiters. What it does not change: whether you can sit an exam, hold a job title, or be licensed for anything.
The CPA case is the one worth spelling out, because students routinely blame accreditation for a problem that is arithmetic. CPA eligibility is set by your state board of accountancy in credit hours and specific course content, not by whether your school holds AACSB. A student at an AACSB school who graduates 12 accounting credits short is ineligible; a student at an unaccredited school who meets the hour rule is eligible. Count the hours against your own state board's published rule, in your sophomore year, and re-count after any transfer.
What does “unaccredited” mean for law and medical schools?
Something categorically different from every other field on this page. Elsewhere, a non-accredited program costs you a route, a credential or some years. In law and medicine it usually costs you the entire profession, because the accreditation is wired directly into exam eligibility rather than into a state board's discretion.
The LCME states that graduates of LCME-accredited programs are eligible for entry into ACGME-accredited residency programs, and that students and graduates of LCME-accredited programs are eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination. It accredits complete and independent MD programs whose students are geographically located in the United States and Canada, and it does not accredit MD programs outside that area. There is no domestic alternative: without the accredited degree there is no USMLE, without the USMLE there is no residency, and without residency there is no independent practice. International medical graduates use a separate certification route, which is precisely the point, a US program that is not accredited has no equivalent mechanism.
Law works the same way with one visible exception. In most jurisdictions, bar eligibility requires a JD from an ABA-approved law school, and a handful of states, California most prominently, allow admission from state-accredited or unaccredited schools under additional conditions. Because the exception exists, unaccredited law schools can advertise honestly while being useless for the state you actually intend to practise in. Check the admission rules of your target bar, not the school's marketing, before you sign anything. The same all-or-nothing structure applies to osteopathic medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and optometry.
Does art and design accreditation matter if no licence is involved?
Yes, but on a different timescale, and the arts accreditors are structured differently from the professional ones. NASAD, NASM, NAST and NASD accredit the institution as a member and then approve the specific curricular programs it offers, so the phrase you are looking for is not just “accredited school” but “this degree listed among the approved programs”. NASM was founded in 1924 and has approximately 597 accredited institutional members as of September 2026; NASAD was founded in 1944 and has approximately 318.
With no licence in play, two consequences remain, and both are about credit rather than permission. Transfer credit for studio and applied lessons is evaluated on contact hours and curricular structure, which is exactly what these accreditors standardise, so studio credit moves badly from a non-accredited school into an accredited one. Graduate admission is the second: a reviewer holding an unfamiliar transcript uses accreditation as a shorthand for what those course titles contained. The general mechanics of moving credit are in transferring credits between accredited schools.
Two arts-adjacent fields break the pattern and are easy to miss. Landscape architecture is licensed in most states and its accreditor, LAAB, sits on the licence route. Interior design is registered or title-protected in a number of states, and the qualifying professional examination has education requirements a non-accredited degree may not satisfy. Neither of those is obvious from the outside, which is why both are in the lookup with amber or red boxes rather than grey.
What should I do if my degree program is not accredited?
Find your situation below. The branches are ordered by how much time you have, which is the only variable that really changes the answer.
1. You are about to enrol
- Open the accreditor's directory from the field card above and search the exact campus and exact degree level. Do not accept a screenshot from the school.
- If the program is absent, ask admissions two written questions: which accreditor, and what is the current status word. Vagueness here is itself the answer.
- Compare against one accredited alternative before you decide. In fields marked red, this is not a preference, it is the difference between a usable and an unusable degree.
2. You are already enrolled and the field is red
- Establish the exact loss. Ask your state board, in writing, whether a graduate of your named program is eligible to sit the licensing exam. Board staff answer this routinely.
- If the answer is no, price the transfer now rather than after graduation. Credits move far better before a credential is conferred than after.
- Ask the accredited program you are considering for a pre-transfer credit evaluation in writing. Verbal estimates from advisers are consistently optimistic.
3. Your program is in candidacy or pre-accreditation
- Get the expected decision date and compare it to your graduation date. If the decision lands after you graduate, you need the next answer.
- Ask whether that accreditor backdates accreditation to cover students who graduated during candidacy. Some do and some do not, and this single policy decides whether your degree works.
- Ask what the program's written plan is if the decision is negative. A program with no answer has told you something.
4. Your field has no programmatic accreditor at all
- Stop looking. For biology, economics, undergraduate psychology and most liberal arts majors there is nothing to find, and the institution's own accreditation is the entire question.
- Treat any school claiming a program-specific accreditation in these fields as a red flag. It is usually a membership association being described as an accreditor.
- If the major is a feeder to a licensed profession, move the accreditation question forward to the graduate program, where it actually lives.
5. You have graduated and a board has refused you
- Ask the board for the specific rule and subsection it applied. Refusals are often about a missing course or hour count rather than accreditation itself, and those are fixable with coursework.
- Ask whether a supervised-hours or additional-coursework remedy exists. It usually does in fields marked amber and usually does not in fields marked red.
- Check a neighbouring state before you conclude the credential is dead. Requirements genuinely differ, and the NC-SARA licensure directory lists board contacts for the five most common fields.
- If you are rethinking the field rather than the school, the college major quiz is a reasonable place to restart, and this page is worth re-reading once you have a shortlist.
Where does this data come from and when was it verified?
Every one of the 44 field rows was built by opening the accreditor's own site or directory on 8 September 2026 and reading what the accreditor says about its own scope. Program counts, institution counts and directory totals are quoted from the page that publishes them, with the date attached, because these change monthly. Where the accreditor's site did not state a licensure rule in its own words, the consequence box says what to confirm and with whom rather than asserting a rule.

Two limits worth stating. Accreditation status changes between reviews, so the directory link on each card is the authority and this page is an index to it. And licensure rules are set state by state; where a card says to confirm with your board, that is because no single national rule exists to quote. CampusBreeze makes free study tools and guides, and does not accredit anything or speak for any accreditor.
What else do students ask about program accreditation?
What is the difference between institutional and programmatic accreditation?
Institutional accreditation applies to the whole college and is what makes federal student aid possible. Programmatic accreditation, also called specialised accreditation, applies to one degree program inside that college and is usually what a licensing board looks at. A school can be institutionally accredited while the specific program you enrolled in has no programmatic accreditation at all, and that combination is legal, common, and the source of most accreditation surprises.
Does every major have a programmatic accreditor?
No. Of the 44 fields in the lookup above, 14 have no licence tied to accreditation and several have no programmatic accreditor of any kind, including undergraduate psychology, biology, economics and most liberal arts majors. For those fields the institution's own accreditation is the only accreditation that exists, and a school advertising anything more specific is describing membership, not accreditation.
Is ABET accreditation of an engineering technology degree the same as an engineering degree?
No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in the dataset. ABET runs separate commissions: the Engineering Accreditation Commission accredits engineering programs at bachelor and master level, while the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission accredits engineering technology programs at associate and bachelor level. ABET states that graduates of ABET-accredited bachelor-level engineering degree programs are eligible to become registered professional engineers in all US states and territories, while graduates of ABET-accredited bachelor-level engineering technology programs are eligible by the same process in many, but not all, states.
Can an accredited program still fail to meet my state's licensure requirements?
Yes. Programmatic accreditation and state educational requirements are separate tests, and a program can pass one and fail the other, most often over supervised hours, a specific course, or a jurisprudence examination. Under 34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v), an institution offering a program designed to meet licensure requirements must publish a list of every state where it has determined the program does and does not meet those requirements, and under 668.43(c) it must notify you directly if the answer is no or if it has made no determination at all.
My program is in candidacy rather than accredited. Does that count?
Candidacy or pre-accreditation means a program is in a formal review process toward its first accreditation and has not earned it yet. Some fields backdate accreditation to cover students who graduated during candidacy and some do not, and the difference decides whether your degree is usable. Ask the program in writing for the specific policy of its accreditor, the date it expects a decision, and what happens to your cohort if the decision is negative.
How do I check my own program rather than trusting a school's website?
Search the accreditor's own directory for the exact campus and the exact degree level, because accreditation is granted to a named program at a named location. A school with an accredited master's program may run an unaccredited bachelor's in the same department, and an accredited main campus may have a branch or online section that is not covered. Every field card above links straight to the accreditor's directory for that reason.
