Are R1 universities harder to get into?

Duke University, an R1 school, admitted about 4.8% of applicants for the class entering fall 2025, while the University of North Texas, also R1, admitted about 70.9% of applicants that same fall, according to Duke's own announcement and the University of North Texas's 2025-2026 Common Data Set. Selectivity is a fact about one specific school, not about the Carnegie tier it holds.

What are the disadvantages of attending an R1 university as an undergrad?

The realistic downsides show up at the department level, not from the R1 label itself: a large graduate and postdoc population can compete with undergraduates for lab openings, high-demand intro courses in popular majors can run large even when the school-wide student-to-faculty ratio looks low, and advising loads can stretch thin in oversubscribed departments. None of that is universal to every R1 school or every department inside one, so check the specific major rather than the school-wide research tier.

Is undergraduate research easier to get at an R1 school?
