What this is for
Use this to decide how to weight a college list you are already building, not to pick a single winning school. A good list usually mixes environment types anyway. The point is figuring out which type deserves more of your slots, and which type you can safely drop.
This quiz does not know your GPA, your test scores, your intended major, or what your family can pay. It only measures how you say you want to work and learn. Run it alongside a real net price comparison and an honest look at your transcript before you finalize anything.
"Research university" is a specific, checkable label, not a vibe. The Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education classify institutions as R1, R2, or Research Colleges and Universities (RCU) based only on how much they spend on research and development and how many research doctorates they award, averaged across recent years. As of the 2025 Research Activity Designations, released February 13, 2025, there are 187 R1 institutions, 139 R2 institutions, and 216 RCU institutions in the United States. Those three groups plus everything else (colleges with no research designation at all) are the four buckets this quiz sorts you into.
What Do the Eight Questions Measure?
Each question adds points toward one or more of the four archetypes. Nothing here is scored right or wrong. Skipping a question is always allowed and simply adds zero points everywhere for that question.

What Does a Large Public R1 Get You?
Archetype A is the flagship-scale public research university: think 20,000 or more students, dozens of majors, and a research budget in the tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. To hold R1 status under the 2025 Carnegie Research Activity Designations, a school must spend at least $50 million a year on research and development and award at least 70 research doctorates annually, and 187 institutions clear that bar as of the February 2025 release.
What it's good at: breadth. Dozens of majors and minors, graduate-level electives you can cross into as an upperclassman, funded labs across nearly every department, Division I athletics and a large enough alumni network that your degree gets recognized cold in most rooms.
What it costs you: your intro chemistry or economics class might have 300 people in it, taught by a professor you will not get five minutes alone with unless you show up to office hours on purpose. Advising is opt-in, not opt-out. Undergraduate research exists but you generally have to go find it, cold-email a lab, or apply to a formal program rather than have it handed to you.
Two checks before you commit to this archetype at a specific school:
- Pull the school's student-to-faculty ratio and typical class size from its Common Data Set, not its marketing page. A 19:1 ratio and a 300-person intro lecture are both true at the same school; ask which one applies to the courses you'll actually take freshman year.
- Search "undergraduate research office" plus the school's name. If there's a dedicated office running structured application cycles for first- and second-years, access is real. If the only mentions are individual lab pages, you'll be doing the legwork yourself.
Is a Midsize or Private R1 Worth the Extra Price?
Archetype B holds the exact same R1 designation as archetype A. Carnegie's threshold, $50 million in research spending and 70 research doctorates a year, does not care whether the institution is public or private, or whether it enrolls 45,000 students or 6,000. A private research university with 6,000 undergraduates and a medical school can be R1 for the identical dollar-and-doctorate reasons a state flagship is R1. The environment, though, is different: smaller lectures, more contact with senior faculty, and a campus small enough that showing up to a professor's open lab meeting is normal rather than bold.
The price problem: per the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, average published tuition and fees for first-time, full-time students at private nonprofit 4-year institutions were $40,700 in academic year 2022-23, the most recent year NCES had published on its Fast Facts page as of September 2026, against $9,800 at public 4-year institutions (in-state or in-district). That gap is sticker price, not net price. Run the school's own net price calculator before assuming this archetype is out of reach; merit and need-based aid frequently close a large share of that difference for specific families.
How to test the "small school, big research" promise at a specific college: check the ratio of undergraduates to graduate students and postdocs on the Common Data Set. A school can be R1 university-wide while running most intro courses through teaching assistants, if its graduate population is large relative to its undergraduate one. Then check the actual department you care about, not the university average. R1 research at a given school is often concentrated in a handful of departments; a school can be R1 in engineering and look nothing like it in the humanities.
What's the Case for an R2 or RCU Regional University?
Archetype C is the most underrated option on this list. R2 status requires at least $5 million a year in research spending and 20 research doctorates; the newer RCU designation requires at least $2.5 million in research spending with no doctorate minimum at all, and covers baccalaureate-only schools and Tribal Colleges and Universities running genuine research programs. As of the 2025 release, 139 institutions hold R2 status and 216 hold RCU status. That is more real research capacity spread across more schools than most students assume exists outside the R1 list.
Why it's underrated: less competition for a spot in a lab, because there's no large graduate and postdoc population ahead of you in line. Regional universities frequently own specific professional programs (nursing, engineering technology, education, applied business) with direct pipelines to regional employers. In-state tuition at these schools tracks closer to the public 4-year national average of $9,800 a year (2022-23, per NCES) than a flagship's often-higher in-state rate, and far below the private R1 average.
The honest limits: fewer doctoral programs means a narrower range of research fields and fewer endowment-funded research fellowships than an R1 offers. Name recognition outside your region is weaker. If your goal is a specific, rare research area with only a handful of labs nationally, an RCU or R2 school is less likely to be one of them, though it is worth checking rather than assuming.
Research University vs Teaching College: What Do You Give Up?
Archetype D covers colleges that don't clear any Carnegie research threshold at all, typically small, often under 5,000 students, where teaching, not grant-funded research, is the primary basis for faculty hiring and promotion. What that buys you: small classes from day one, professors who know your name and your handwriting, and a campus small enough that a formal "program" isn't needed to walk you into an opportunity, an advisor can just do it in a five-minute conversation.
The research question, answered honestly: a no-research-designation college does not shut you out of research. NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program funds summer research at host institutions nationwide, and its own eligibility rule is about citizenship, not about your home school's Carnegie status: "Undergraduate student participants in either REU Sites or REU Supplements must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. permanent residents," with no requirement that your enrolled institution hold any research designation. You apply directly to individual REU Sites, usually hosted at research universities, as of September 2026 per NSF's own program page. You will do that research in the summer, away from your home campus, rather than in the hallway between classes during the semester.
Who should not choose this archetype: anyone who wants in-house access to a research lab during the semester rather than only in the summer, anyone PhD-bound who wants an early co-authored paper before applying to doctoral programs, and anyone who needs a specific professional licensure track, clinical nursing rotations or an ABET-heavy engineering major, that a small teaching college simply may not offer.
R1 vs Liberal Arts College: How Do You Break a Close Tie?
If your top two archetype scores land within 2 points of each other, the result screen above shows both as a joint result rather than manufacturing a single winner from a coin-flip margin. When that happens, cost is the tiebreaker this quiz recommends first, specifically your answer to the price-sensitivity question, because two genuinely close-fitting environments are more reliably separated by what you'll actually pay than by which one sounds more prestigious.
Geography is the second tiebreaker. In-state public tuition collapses a large part of the gap between "large public R1" and "R2 or RCU regional," and it can make a private R1 or a small college look closer in net price than the sticker prices suggest, once you run each school's net price calculator. What's the Best College Type for Me? What This Quiz Leaves Out
This quiz deliberately ignores selectivity, national rankings, and reputation. That's not an oversight. A Research Activity Designation is not a ranking and was never designed to be one: it is a fixed threshold on two numbers, research dollars spent and research doctorates awarded, averaged over recent years, and every school that clears the line gets the identical label regardless of how far above it they sit. A school's admit rate, its position on a magazine's list, and how often people outside your region have heard of it are separate questions that this tool does not touch.

What happens if my top two scores are close?
If the top two archetypes are within 2 points of each other, the result page shows both as a joint result instead of forcing a single winner, and it points you to your price-sensitivity answer as the most reliable way to break the tie, because cost separates two workable options more often than prestige does.
Does a research designation mean a college is better for undergraduates?
No. The Carnegie Research Activity Designation only measures two things, annual research spending and the number of research doctorates awarded, averaged over recent years. It says nothing about undergraduate teaching quality, class size, or student outcomes, so R1 status is a signal about the research environment, not a quality ranking.
Can I skip a question I'm not sure about?
Yes. Skipping adds zero points to every archetype for that question. The result page tells you how many questions you skipped and notes that the result is weaker with more skips, since fewer data points went into your score.
Can I come back to my result later or share it?

Is this the same thing as a college ranking?
No. It sorts you toward an environment type, large public R1, midsize or private R1, R2 or RCU regional university, or a college with no research designation, based on how you work and what you want out of college. It does not rank schools by selectivity, reputation, or outcomes, and those are separate questions you should research on your own once you know which environment fits.
