What's the difference between a test provider's rule and your institution's rule?

Every row above except "acceptance caveat" describes what the test provider itself allows: whether it will produce a report showing a retaken skill or a combined score at all. Whether anyone downstream will use that report is a separate decision made by someone else entirely, a university admissions office, a national visa authority, or a professional regulator, and that decision does not have to match what the provider permits.

IELTS is the clearest case. IELTS will happily issue a One Skill Retake Test Report Form to anyone eligible. Whether your target accepts that form is a second, independent question, and IELTS says so directly: organisations have to actively register with IELTS to accept One Skill Retake results, and IELTS recommends checking with your target before you book³. IRCC is a documented example of a body that has looked at the option and refused it: its own Express Entry language-testing page states plainly, "We don't accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry"⁴. The same page also drops PTE Academic from its approved list while naming PTE Core as the accepted Pearson test⁴, which means the more popular, more widely-taught version of a Pearson test is the wrong one for that specific pipeline. A provider's yes is necessary but never sufficient. The three places worth checking before you book anything are your program's own requirements page, your visa or immigration authority's approved-test list, and, where it applies, your professional regulator's policy on combining sittings.

How many times can you take IELTS?

IELTS does not publish a global limit on attempts or a mandatory waiting period between full retakes². In practice, how soon you can sit again is set by your test centre's own calendar and seat availability, not by a rule from IELTS itself. If a full four-skill resit is what you need, the ceiling is your local booking page, not a policy document.

IELTS One Skill Retake: the 60-day window, once-per-test limit and delivery-mode match

One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you redo exactly one of the four skills, listening, reading, writing or speaking, without touching the other three. IELTS's own eligibility rules are specific on four points¹: your original full test must have been an IELTS on computer test; you can retake exactly one skill; you get one retake per original test, so if two skills came in short, OSR cannot cover both; and you must book and sit the retake within 60 days of your original test date. If your original test could not be delivered on computer because of a special requirement, IELTS directs you to contact your test centre directly rather than publishing a fixed alternative path. Results arrive 3 to 5 days after the retake, and the new Test Report Form shows the updated skill next to your three original scores, you choose which version to send¹. The catch sits entirely in acceptance, not eligibility. Registered organisations have to opt in with IELTS before they accept OSR results, and IELTS itself recommends checking with your target directly before you book³. For anyone applying through Canada's Express Entry, that check has already been made for you and the answer is no⁴.

What are TOEFL MyBest Scores, and will your school accept them?

The actual TOEFL retake rule: a 3-day gap, not a myth-sized wait

ETS's real rule is short: you cannot register for a new TOEFL iBT appointment that falls within 3 days of an existing one, and that rule still applies even if you cancelled your previous scores. There is no cap on how many times you can take the test in a year or over a lifetime⁵. The only real ceiling is that every score expires 2 years after its test date, so retaking a fourth time does nothing for a score that has already aged out. TOEFL has no single-skill retake. What are the PTE Academic and PTE Core retake rules?

Both PTE Academic and PTE Core run on the same published retake policy. You can book your next attempt as soon as you have received the scores from your last one, and the next available date can fall inside the same calendar month⁷. Pearson caps this at 12 attempts within any rolling 12-month period, with an exception form for candidates who need more⁷. Neither version offers a way to retake a single skill or to combine scores from two sittings into one report: a low Speaking score means booking the whole test again.

The cancellation terms matter if you already have a booking you might not use. Cancel more than 14 calendar days out and you get a full refund; between 7 and 14 days out, 50%; inside 7 days, nothing. Rescheduling is free with more than 14 days' notice, capped at 6 reschedules per booking⁸. An unclaimed slot inside that final week is effectively a forfeited fee, not a credit toward your next attempt.

The acceptance split between the two versions is sharper than the retake mechanics: Canada's Express Entry program does not accept PTE Academic at all, and names PTE Core as its required Pearson test⁴. If you are studying for a Canadian permanent-residence file and already have a PTE Academic score, it will not carry over, you need a PTE Core sitting specifically.

What is the Duolingo English Test retake policy?

Duolingo's help center caps purchases at 3 tests within any rolling 30-day period, and after finishing an attempt you must wait to receive that result before starting a new one⁹. There is no single-skill retake, the test is one adaptive session covering every skill together, and there is no mechanism to combine scores across attempts: each report you send stands on its own. The economics are worth doing on paper. At $70 a sitting as of September 2026¹⁴, three attempts inside one 30-day window cost $210, the maximum you could spend before the 30-day purchase cap forces a pause. If your first score just needs a small nudge on one weak section, a second $70 attempt is still the only path forward, because there is no way to retake only that section, so you are paying full price to re-earn scores you already had on the parts that were already fine.

How do Cambridge, CELPIP and OET handle a retake?

Which retake option fits when only one skill let you down?

1. Confirm it's really one skill. If two or more sections are short, every single-skill mechanism on this page is out of reach, only IELTS has one at all, and it only covers one skill per original test. Go straight to a full retake.
2. If you're on IELTS and your original test was computer-delivered, check One Skill Retake's 60-day window before assuming you're eligible: miss that window and it becomes a full resit by default.
3. If you're on TOEFL, check whether you already have a stronger score for that exact section from a valid sitting within the last 2 years. If you do, MyBest may already cover the gap with no new test needed, confirm the combined number against your target's stated requirement.
4. For every other test on this page, PTE Academic, PTE Core, Duolingo, Cambridge, CELPIP and OET (outside AHPRA's specific allowance), budget for a full retake. There is no cheaper single-skill shortcut, and pretending otherwise just delays the booking you were always going to need.
