How to Register for IELTS, Step by Step

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Whichever one you book through, you sit the same test, drawn from the same question bank, marked against the same band descriptors by examiners certified to the same standard (IDP, "IELTS Test: IDP or British Council?," 2026). Neither provider gives an easier test or a friendlier examiner. What actually differs is logistics: which one has a centre near you, which one has a seat on the date you need, and what the local fee is in your currency. In cities with both, compare seat availability first and price second; a seat three weeks earlier is usually worth more than a small fee difference if you have a visa or application deadline behind it.

Before you pay, run three checks. First, open your offer letter or visa instructions and find the exact wording: "IELTS Academic," "IELTS General Training," or "IELTS for UKVI." These are not interchangeable and a university admissions office or the UK Home Office will not accept the wrong one. Second, confirm your route: IELTS for UKVI is a Secure English Language Test and must be taken at a Home Office-approved test centre, not a standard IELTS centre, even though the content and format are the same test (IELTS, "IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration," 2026). Third, confirm your delivery mode is one the receiving organisation accepts; a small number of institutions still ask for IELTS on paper specifically, and Writing on Paper is not offered at all for IELTS for UKVI test types. Once you pay, the test type on your booking cannot be converted to a different one after the fact: a wrong purchase becomes a cancellation, on the cancellation terms in Step 4, not a free swap.

Create your account on the provider's site and fill in the application form. The single detail that matters most: your name has to match your ID exactly, including middle names, generational suffixes and non-English characters. Test centres check your ID against your booking before letting you into the room, and a mismatch is treated as a wrong document, not a typo the invigilator can wave through. Beyond your name, the form asks for your date of birth, your passport or national ID number, your preferred test date and centre, and your Speaking test slot where it's booked separately from Listening, Reading and Writing. When you're done, save the confirmation email: it carries your exact reporting time, room number, and any Speaking test date if it falls on a different day.

Your fee covers one sitting of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, one Test Report Form, and free result-sharing with organisations by e-delivery. What you get back if your plans change depends on which test type you booked, not on which provider. IELTS for UKVI, covering Academic, General Training and Life Skills, runs on one refund and transfer schedule that British Council states applies wherever you book it: cancel more than 14 days before your test for a 75% refund, 50% if it's within 14 days but more than 2 days out, 25% within 2 days, and nothing on the test day or after. A transfer to a new date is only possible more than 14 days out, costs an administration fee of up to 25%, and can be used once per booking; anything closer than 14 days is treated as a cancellation under those same refund tiers, not a separate transfer (British Council, "IELTS for UKVI Cancellations and Refund Policy," 2026). Standard IELTS Academic and General Training bookings do not follow this schedule: British Council's own guidance says cancellation and transfer terms for those tests are set by the country and test centre you booked through and vary from one to the next, so check your specific centre's terms rather than assume the UKVI numbers above apply to you (British Council, "Cancellations, Refunds and Transfers," accessed September 2026). Either test type carries the same exception: you can file a case for exceptional circumstances, such as a documented medical condition or a bereavement, up to five working days after a missed test, and your centre has to respond within seven working days; an approved case gets a full refund minus an administration fee of up to 25%. Minor illness, like a cold, doesn't qualify.

This schedule is IELTS for UKVI's global policy. Standard IELTS Academic and General Training terms are set locally, so check your own test centre's cancellation and transfer terms before you rely on a specific percentage.

You must bring the same valid passport or national identity card you used when you booked, in the original, physical form: not a photocopy, not a photo of it on your phone, not a different document you happen to also own. Staff check it before you enter the room, and your Speaking examiner checks it again. If the document has expired by your test date, even if it was valid the day you booked, you will not be permitted to sit the test (IDP, "What to Bring to an IELTS Test," and IELTS, "What to Expect on IELTS Test Day," 2026). There are no passport photos to bring: the centre photographs you at registration, and that photograph is what appears on your Test Report Form as a security measure, matching the person who sat the test to the person receiving the score.

Eat before you travel: you cannot bring food into the test room. You can bring water, but only in a clear, unlabelled bottle. Every electronic device, including your phone switched off, goes into the personal-belongings area the centre sets up, not into a pocket. Listening, Reading and Writing run back to back with no break between them, for about 2 hours 40 minutes in total; go to the bathroom before you're seated, because there isn't another chance until Writing ends (IELTS, "What to Expect on IELTS Test Day," and British Council, "Test Day Advice," 2026).

• I ran the official system check on my computer, webcam, microphone and internet at least a day ahead.
• My desk is clear and I'll do the live room scan on request: no papers, no second screen, no one else in the room.
• I confirmed this is a Home Office-approved IELTS for UKVI centre before travelling.
• I know I'll be paired with another candidate for Speaking and Listening, and their performance doesn't affect my score.

How fast results appear depends on delivery mode: IELTS Online takes 6 to 8 days, IELTS on computer takes 1 to 5 days, Writing on Paper takes up to 5 days, and IELTS on paper takes up to 13 days; IELTS for UKVI Life Skills takes up to 9 days (IELTS, "Getting and Sharing Your Results," accessed September 2026). You receive a Test Report Form, on paper or as a digital eTRF, carrying your four section scores and overall band, valid for two years from your test date. You can send results to up to five organisations by post at no charge, or to as many organisations as you like through free e-delivery; IELTS Online results can only be shared by e-delivery. If you think a section was marked wrong, you can request an Enquiry on Results (a remark) within six weeks of your test date; a re-mark typically comes back anywhere from a few hours to 21 days depending on how many sections you ask to have re-checked, and if your band goes up, the re-mark fee is refunded (IDP, "Request a Remark," 2026).
