Research spending per student divides a school's total research and development expenditure by its enrollment, so a campus with 8,000 students and one with 40,000 can be compared on equal footing. How do I calculate research spending per student?
Before you type anything in, set the unit toggle correctly. NSF's HERD data tables report research expenditure in thousands of dollars, and typing a raw table figure straight into a dollar field is the single most common way people misread this data by a factor of 1,000. The toggle below defaults to "Thousands," matching the HERD tables directly. Switch it to "Dollars" only if you already have an actual dollar amount, for example a figure quoted in a press release or a school's own research office page.

A HERD table row reading "50,000" means $50,000 thousand, which is $50 million, not $50,000. If you copied a figure straight out of a HERD data table, leave the toggle on "Thousands." If your figure already is a full dollar amount, switch to "Dollars" first.

Where do I find HERD research expenditures, enrollment and doctorate counts?
All three numbers this calculator needs are public, but they live in three different federal data systems. Here is the exact page to open for each one, current as of September 2026.

"Research doctorate" has a specific meaning here: NCES NCSES defines it as a doctoral degree that requires an original dissertation or equivalent culminating project and is not primarily a professional-practice credential. That excludes MD, DDS, DVM, JD, DPharm, DMin and PsyD degrees, even though those are doctorates in the everyday sense of the word. Only the research kind counts toward the R1, R2 and RCU thresholds.
How does the R1, R2 and RCU threshold check work?
The Carnegie Classification's 2025 Research Activity Designations sort research-active schools into three tiers using a fixed dollar amount and, for the top two tiers, a fixed doctorate count. Both R1 conditions have to be true at the same time: a school spending $80 million but awarding only 40 research doctorates is not R1, it is R2, no matter how large that dollar figure looks.

One nuance the calculator above simplifies for speed: Carnegie's own methodology does not use a single year. The 2025 designations were built from three years of HERD expenditure (FY2021–FY2023) and three years of IPEDS-reported doctorates (2020–21 through 2022–23), averaged. This tool checks whichever single year you enter, which is enough to see where a school sits and how far it is from the next line, but a school hovering right at a threshold in one year could land on either side of it once Carnegie averages three years together. What does research spending per student actually tell you?
It is a measure of research density: how much sponsored research activity exists on campus relative to how many students are around it. A high figure usually means more funded lab positions, more paid undergraduate research assistantships, and a bigger pool of graduate students and postdocs doing the kind of work an ambitious undergraduate might get pulled into. That is a real, useful signal when you are comparing two schools of very different size, since raw research totals alone make a 45,000-student flagship look automatically more "research intensive" than an 8,000-student school with a genuinely dense research culture.
What it is not is a quality ranking or a promise about your own experience. It says nothing about whether that research money reaches your specific department, whether undergraduates are actually invited into labs, or whether the school teaches its intro courses well. Why can a big research spending number mislead you?
HERD's institution-level totals bundle in everything the reporting unit runs under one roof, and that unit is not always "the undergraduate campus" in the way you would picture it. Three patterns show up repeatedly in the FY2024 HERD Table 4 rankings:
- Affiliated research labs. Johns Hopkins University reported $4.13 billion in FY2024 R&D expenditure, the highest of any U.S. institution, but NSF's own footnote on that figure says the total "includes the Applied Physics Laboratory," which alone accounted for $2.55 billion of it. APL is a not-for-profit university affiliated research center that Johns Hopkins operates mainly for U.S. defense and space work; it employs scientists and engineers, not undergraduates, and does not teach classes. Strip APL out and Johns Hopkins' campus-proper research total is closer to $1.58 billion, almost exactly Ohio State's total on roughly half the enrollment.
- Medical centers and cancer centers. The same HERD table lists institutions like the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as standalone, multibillion-dollar research reporters in their own right, and lists others, such as Texas A&M University, College Station and Health Science Center, as one combined figure spanning a main campus and a medical center. Whether a medical enterprise is folded into the undergraduate campus's number or reported separately depends on how each institution answers the survey, not on any rule you can predict from outside.
- Agricultural experiment stations. Land-grant universities receive federal formula funds for agricultural research stations that report through the same HERD survey as the rest of the university, adding real research dollars that mostly never touch a lecture hall.
None of this means the research is not real or not valuable. It means a single campus-wide dollar figure cannot tell you how close that research sits to where you would actually be as a student.
Should I use headcount or full-time-equivalent enrollment?
This calculator uses headcount by default: an unduplicated count of every enrolled student, full-time or part-time, which is the number College Navigator shows directly on a school's profile page without any extra math. Full-time-equivalent (FTE) enrollment is a different, computed figure. Per NCES's IPEDS glossary, FTE takes the full-time headcount as-is and adds a weighted-down version of the part-time headcount, using factors such as 0.403543 for part-time undergraduates at public four-year schools and 0.361702 for part-time graduate students at the same institution type.
Because FTE shrinks the part-time portion of the denominator, a school's FTE-based per-student figure will always come out higher than its headcount-based figure, sometimes by a wide margin at schools with large part-time graduate or professional populations. If you see a per-student number elsewhere that looks unusually high compared with this calculator's output for the same school, check whether it was built on FTE rather than headcount before assuming something else changed. The same headcount-versus-FTE distinction also matters when reading a school's student-faculty ratio, which most schools report on an FTE basis.
How do three real universities compare on research spending per student?
All three schools below cleared the R1 bar in FY2024, but their per-student figures span nearly a 9x range, for reasons that have nothing to do with which one does better research.

Johns Hopkins' figure is the extreme case from the section above: about $2.55 billion of its $4.13 billion is the Applied Physics Laboratory, a defense and space research lab that does not enroll students. Subtract APL and Johns Hopkins' remaining $1.58 billion, divided by its 30,210 students, works out to roughly $52,300 per student, still the highest of the three, but a difference of degree rather than the roughly 9x gap the unadjusted number implies. Ohio State's $25,740 reflects a genuinely enormous research budget spread across an even more enormous enrollment: 61,443 students is more than double Johns Hopkins' headcount. Connecticut's $15,316 is the smallest of the three not because its research is weaker in absolute terms, at $433.5 million it still clears the R1 dollar threshold by more than 8x, but because it carries that budget across a mid-sized flagship enrollment without an outsized affiliated lab or medical center attached.
The lesson is not "avoid the school with the big number." It is that per-student research spending answers a narrow question, how research-dense is this campus, and answers it best when you already know what is driving the dollar figure on each side of the comparison.
What should I check after running the numbers?
Run the per-student figure for two schools you are actually deciding between, then stop treating the campus-wide number as the answer and start checking the department you would join. A university-wide R1 designation tells you $50 million or more in research happens somewhere on that campus; it does not tell you whether it happens in your intended major, or whether undergraduates in that department get lab access, paid research positions, or faculty attention. Two ways to check that directly: look up your specific department's faculty list and recent publications, and ask an admitted-student contact or the department directly whether undergraduates typically join active research projects.
Once research fit is settled, the remaining decision variables are usually financial and academic, not research-related. Is my school R1? How do I check?
A school is R1 if it spends at least $50 million a year on research and development and awards at least 70 research doctorates in the same year, under the Carnegie Classification's 2025 Research Activity Designations. Enter both numbers into the calculator above and the gauges will latch green on the R1 line the moment you clear both thresholds at once.
Why does HERD data need a units toggle?
NSF's HERD data tables report research expenditure in thousands of dollars, not dollars. A table row reading "50,000" means $50,000 thousand, or $50 million. Typing that number in without adjusting for units understates the real figure by a factor of 1,000, which is why this calculator defaults its unit toggle to "thousands" and asks you to switch it only when you already have an actual dollar amount.
What is the R2 threshold, and the RCU threshold?
R2 requires at least $5 million a year in research spending and at least 20 research doctorates awarded. Research Colleges and Universities (RCU) status requires at least $2.5 million in research spending with no doctorate minimum, and only applies to schools that do not already qualify for R1 or R2. All three tiers come from the Carnegie Classification's 2025 Research Activity Designations.
Does a high research spending per student number mean a better undergraduate experience?
Not directly. A high figure often reflects a medical center, an affiliated research lab, or a small total enrollment relative to a large research budget, none of which changes whether undergraduates in a specific major get lab access or small classes. Check the department you would actually join, not the campus-wide total, before treating the number as a quality signal.
Should I use headcount or full-time equivalent enrollment?
This calculator uses headcount, an unduplicated count of every enrolled student, because that is the figure published directly on each school's IPEDS College Navigator profile. Full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment weights part-time students down using IPEDS conversion factors, which shrinks the denominator and pushes the per-student figure higher, so a school's FTE-based number will not match a headcount-based one from another source.
