What is the Cambridge English Scale?

The Cambridge English Scale is a single 80-to-230 scoring scale that runs across the whole Cambridge English exam family: A2 Key, B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency. Cambridge introduced it in January 2015 for B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, then extended it to A2 Key and B1 Preliminary from February 2016, replacing the separate standardised scores each exam used to report on its own.

CEFR The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Six bands, A1 to C2, used across Europe to describe language ability regardless of which test produced the result.

The point of one shared scale is that a given number means the same thing no matter which exam produced it. A score of 190 sits in the CEFR C1 band whether you took B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, because Cambridge sets grade boundaries against the scale itself, not against each exam separately. Each exam reports on the section it is built to measure: B2 First spans roughly B1 to C1, C1 Advanced spans B2 to C2, and C2 Proficiency spans B2 to C2 at the top end. That overlap is deliberate, and it is why a score near the edge of your exam's range can look like a "different" exam's grade, which the tool below shows directly.

How is my Cambridge English overall score calculated?

Your overall score is the average of the individual scores from each part of the exam: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Use of English. C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency test all five, weighted equally, with no minimum on any single paper. Cambridge rounds the average to the nearest whole point to produce the number on your Statement of Results.

Use of English A paper in B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency that tests grammar and vocabulary control directly, separately from the four skills. It counts as a fifth component in your average.

In practice:

  1. Each of the five components is scored on the same 80–230 scale.
  2. The five scores are averaged, equally weighted.
  3. The average is rounded to the nearest whole point.
  4. That rounded number is your overall score, the one your grade and CEFR level are read from.

With no per-paper pass mark, an off day in Speaking does not sink a candidate who scores well in Reading and Use of English. A2 Key is the one exception in the family: its Reading and Writing paper tests two skills at once, so Cambridge double-weights it. C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency use no such adjustment.

What do C1 Advanced Grades A, B and C mean?

C1 Advanced (also called CAE, Certificate in Advanced English) is aimed at CEFR Level C1, but Cambridge designed it to report results across a wider span, from B2 up to C2. The exam reports scores from 142 to 210. Here is exactly how each score range certifies:

What score is a CAE Grade B?

A CAE Grade B is 193 to 199 on the Cambridge English Scale. It certifies CEFR Level C1, the same level as a Grade C, and one step below a Grade A. The gap is narrow: a single point separates 192 from 193, so a small shift in Use of English or Writing can move you between grades without changing your CEFR level.

The Grade A surprise

One detail trips people up: a C1 Advanced Grade A does not certify C1. It certifies CEFR Level C2, because 200 and above sits inside the C2 band of the shared scale. Cambridge notes that C1 Advanced is not built to test the full range of C2 skills and recommends C2 Proficiency for candidates who want to demonstrate C2 fully, but the certificate wording at Grade A still says C2.

What do C2 Proficiency Grades A, B and C mean?

C2 Proficiency (CPE, Certificate of Proficiency in English) targets CEFR Level C2 and reports scores from 162 to 230, the top end of the whole Cambridge English Scale.

Where C2 Proficiency reports C1 instead

Unlike C1 Advanced, every passing grade on C2 Proficiency (A, B or C) certifies the same CEFR level: C2. The step down happens once, at 200. Score 180–199 and Cambridge still issues a certificate, but it states CEFR Level C1 instead. That band, 180–199, is the same one a C1 Advanced Grade B or C covers, which is the overlap the score tool below flags automatically.

What happens if I score below 180 on C1 Advanced?

A score of 160 to 179 does not carry a C1 Advanced grade, but it is not a blank result either. Cambridge issues a certificate naming the level you actually reached: CEFR B2. Below 160, from 142 to 159, there is no certificate: the Statement of Results still shows the numeric score, but no grade or CEFR level. Below 142, C1 Advanced does not report a score at all.

The B2 certificate is worth keeping for three reasons. It documents a real, independently verified skill level, useful anywhere a program lists B2 as its floor. It never expires, so it stays usable if your plans change and you reapply years later. And retaking C1 Advanced later does not erase it: Cambridge results are cumulative evidence, not a pass/fail record a retake overwrites.

What does your Cambridge English score mean?

How does the Cambridge English Scale compare to IELTS?

Cambridge publishes an official correspondence between IELTS band scores and the Cambridge English Scale, built from its own validation research. It is a band-level alignment, not a formula for turning one exact number into another:

Use this the way Cambridge intends it: to read a range, not to convert. A 195 on C1 Advanced sits inside the 191–199 band that corresponds to IELTS 7.5, but 195 does not "equal" 7.5 the way a currency conversion equals an exact amount. In CEFR terms: B2 is fluent enough to talk with native speakers without strain and handle most everyday and some specialised topics; C1 is fluent, well-structured use for social, academic and professional purposes with only occasional searching for words; C2 is near-native precision, including picking up subtle shades of meaning. Cambridge's boundaries put C1 Advanced's target squarely in that C1 description and C2 Proficiency's in the C2 one, which is why a Grade A on C1 Advanced already reads as C2: the boundary tracks the CEFR description, not the exam's name.

Do Cambridge English certificates expire?

No. Cambridge states that a result and certificate are valid indefinitely: they record that on a specific date you demonstrated a specific level of ability, and that fact does not change. There is no official expiry date printed on the certificate and no requirement to retake the exam after a set number of years.

SELT Secure English Language Test. The UK Home Office's category for the specific, security-audited tests it accepts for certain visa routes. Being a respected exam is not the same as being an approved SELT.

What can still expire is an institution's willingness to accept an old score. Universities, employers and government bodies set their own currency rules on top: some accept a Cambridge certificate from any year, others ask for one from the last two or three years. Check the specific program's policy rather than assuming "no expiry" settles it everywhere.

Where are Cambridge English exams accepted?

Cambridge English says its exams are accepted and used by over 25,000 universities, employers and governments worldwide, as of September 2026. C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency both routinely meet direct university admission requirements, the same role IELTS and TOEFL usually play on an admissions checklist.

The UK visa question

For UK visas specifically, the answer is more limited. As of September 2026, the UK Home Office's approved SELT providers for routes that require a full four-skills test are Trinity College London, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LanguageCert, and Pearson (PSI Services stands in for test centres outside the UK). No Cambridge English exam is on that list. So C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency can satisfy a university's own English requirement for direct admission, but it cannot stand in for a SELT on a visa route that requires one, such as most Student and Skilled Worker applications.

The Australian instrument

Australia's Department of Home Affairs takes the opposite position: it recognises C1 Advanced directly, with its own points-relevant thresholds. As of September 2026, Cambridge reports the Home Affairs bands as 169 (each skill and overall) for Competent English, 185 for Proficient English, and 200 for Superior English. Because these are published thresholds, C1 Advanced is a calculable option for the Australian points system, not just an exam a caseworker happens to recognise.

Who should choose a Cambridge exam over IELTS or TOEFL?

Three profiles get real, specific value from Cambridge over the alternatives:

  • You want a result that never goes stale. A multi-year visa process, a gap year, or a program you might reapply to later all favor Cambridge's no-expiry policy over IELTS and TOEFL, which most institutions treat as expiring after two years.
  • You are strong overall but nervous about one skill. A rough Speaking day cannot sink you the way a hard band-per-skill requirement can elsewhere, since the overall averages five equally weighted components.   • You are targeting the Australian points system through C1 Advanced. The published Competent, Proficient and Superior thresholds above make your required score a known number, not a guess.

How do you read a Cambridge Statement of Results?

Every Cambridge Statement of Results and certificate follows the same layout. Read it in this order:

  1. Candidate details and exam session. Your name, candidate number, and the exact date and location you sat the paper.
  2. Overall score. The single number, on the 80–230 scale, that everything else on the page is read from.
  3. Grade or level. The letter grade (A, B, C) if you earned one, or the CEFR level statement if your score fell below the exam's own grading floor but above its reporting floor.
  4. CEFR level. The certified level (B2, C1 or C2, depending on your score and exam), stated in the exact sentence your certificate uses, which is the wording an admissions office or employer will actually check.
  5. Individual skill scores. Your separate Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Use of English scores, each also on the same 80–230 scale, useful for spotting a specific weak area even though none of them can fail you outright.
  6. Verification details. A unique reference number and a note on the Results Verification Service, which is how a receiving institution confirms your certificate is genuine.

What does a Cambridge English Scale score of 180 mean?

180 is the floor of the CEFR C1 band on the Cambridge English Scale. On C1 Advanced, 180 is the bottom of Grade C, which certifies C1. On C2 Proficiency, 180 is the bottom of the ungraded band that still earns a certificate, but one stating CEFR Level C1 rather than C2. On B2 First, 180 is the bottom of Grade A, which certifies C1, the highest level that exam reports.

What score is a CAE Grade B?

Is a C2 Proficiency Grade C still a good result?
